Boyfriend of 3 years broke up with me because his and my family will never accept us?

My boyfriend of 3 years finally told me the truth why he keeps breaking up with me and coming back, he said it’s because he can’t let me go. The reason why he was doing this is because he said he knows his family wouldn’t accept us and it would crush his mother and he doesn’t want to hurt her since we are from a different country and religion. He really loves me and I really do too but I was ready to fight for him. He said he was young when he first dated me and he didn’t know the consequences but yet he still loves me and he said he can never ever find someone like me in his life and I’ll always be in his heart. We cried the whole night and he stayed the night here with me and I cried as soon as I woke up because I know this time I have to let go of him. He wouldn’t even look me in the eyes when I was crying and he told me he is crying so much from the inside but feels free when he told me the truth after a year of thinking of it. Do you guys think it’s possible he will be back and fight for me? We are so in love and we can’t keep away from each other and every time we leave we come back to each other. This shit really hurts. We were each other’s first love and first everything and we met when we were only 17 and I can’t think of my life without him seriously.. He kept the letter I wrote him and the necklace I bought him long time ago and he said he is going to wear it his whole life. I could see how hurt he is and he wouldn’t look me in the eyes when he left the apartment.

I've been in this situation before & I can understand why from a cultural/religious point why the family wouldn't accept it. Doesn't make it right though.

He’s Christian orthodox from a small country in Africa and I am Muslim

If he hasn't told his family about you that's a bad sign. He could be lying about his family especially if he never gave you the chance to speak to them. African culture can be strict, but they're accepting. As a Muslim we're not supposed to date and not allowed to marry non Muslim men (i'm not judging) for this exact reason, the pain is too much. Momma's boys are the worst no matter how much they love you they will always listen to her.
You should try to talk to his mom or a sister to get to the truth.

I think he's hiding something.

Ask him to change his religion and then everything will be fine both of you can marry and be happy. Honestly he's not doing his best here he can do more but don't know why he's not really make a serious move.
