Boyfriend went really mad at me for opening his mail but I believe I had a legit concern, didn't I?

So, my boyfriend almost NEVER gets mail.

He has all his bills come digitally, never writes letters, has a NO JUNK MAIL sign on the mail box.

Anyway, a letter came today, from a girl I didn't know, smelling of perfume, and well I kinda had some suspicions, so opened it to see what it was.

It was just a wedding invitation from his cousin, so I was kinda relieved.

However, when he came home and saw the open letter, he flipped, told me I had NO business invading his privacy like that, plus that it's also against the law.

FFS, it was just one letter, a wedding invitation, and I had a legit reason, I thought it might be another woman (he doesn't share his passwords with me so I don't know who he talks).

Am I right or do I owe him an apology? I don't think I do.

What kind of entitled b are you? If you were concerned you should asked him about it when he got home. Wedding invitations typically come in a fancier type of envelope which should have tipped you off. And what does not having his passwords have to do with anything? Keep it up, he will leave you with your lack of trust.

For sure you boyfriend is right.. you should just have giving him his letter, then later you could ask what it was, and then he would just show you the invitation. If you wanted to do anything you could have looked up the name and then you would probably have realised it is his family. WTF.. opening other people's mail is by default NOT ok, unless you have already talked about it and both parties agrees that it is allowed.

I have been sensitive about this as well --- once.
But I know better now: I have nothing to hide, and so I might frown about 'your' procedure, but not get loud about it.
Better idea for next time: hand him the untouched envelope personally and explain your worries; then ask if you can have a look.

I think you should have a 50/50 option here because I can see both sides. BUT if I had to pick I would say your boyfriend has a right to be mad because it was an invasion of his privacy. I think it comes down to trust; if you immediately suspect he is cheating because he received a letter from a woman, then there are underlying issues in the relationship.

Opening someone else's mail is a felony punishable with up to five years in the slam. 18 USC Section 1702 gives the details. You were a bad little girl. Don't do anything like this again.
