What is the better plan for us to follow, to get engaged while I am in college or to get engaged when I have finished college?

So, my boyfriend and I have been dating for 2 years now, and we are waiting until engagement to have sex with each other for religious and preference reasons.

Recently, my boyfriend told me that he would prefer if we got engaged when I have finished college, instead of when I am in college. My boyfriend is finishing college this year, and then he will pursue his masters degree right after, but I am finishing college in 2024, which is a bit far away. I honestly prefer for us to get engaged once he is financially stable, which will be around the time I have started the last year of my course, because by then we will be marking 4 years of dating, and by then I want us to be able to enjoy our relationship to the fullest.

I understand that my boyfriend wants us to both be financially stable and independent before getting engaged, but I honestly don’t want us to practice abstinence for so long, as I feel that it will put a lot of strain on our relationship.

I'm going to have to side with your boyfriend on this one.
College (and finishing college) changes people. Master's degrees are stressful and managing the workload of school, job, job prospects, and you (and maybe his family's expectations) is a tall order. Adding an engagement so you can have sex will just be another thing on his plate.

Personally, I've never understood why people will get engaged for years at time. I was always taught you got engaged, you shared any last secrets between the two of you, then planned the wedding and had it.
