Is the so called ''love of your life'' the person you're going to grow old with? The person you're going to help with the bills at home? The person you're going to have kids with? The one you're going to be there doing the ups and downs, support them?

If the answer is no all of the above and you're just dating to date, you just like how the relationship is going and there is great sex (that's just temporarily and you're attracted to them so what... big deal), what's the point if you're going to break-up eventually?

Even relationships and moving in together seem like a joke nowadays. Do you find the ''you're the love of my life'' a joke?

If I say someone is the love of my life, why would they be any less than the examples you listed? No ones going to say “you’re the love of my life but basically I don’t see a future with you”, like that’s just not making sense. People aren’t committing to relationships they intend to leave, and if they are, then the other person doesn’t know they are being used and the partner being a user is selfish and cruel. But 9 1/2 times out of 10, if I decide to enter a relationship with someone, it’s because I fully want to commit and it is far from pointless. This post just sounds like you projecting your bad experiences and how you’ve given up, now having that defeatist mentality.

I have been with “the love of my life” since I was 16 years old. We have done all those things you mentioned (kids, bills, ups and downs) and is still, to this day, “the love of my life.”
So, it can be real. But like everything else, people overuse it and render the words meaningless.
“We met last week, and he’s the love of my life.”

No, but I want to stay healthy and childless with a wife forever. Not grow old and have kids. I will be there for the ups and downs and doing my share of bills though.

I agree with everything you said. Most people only care about the sex and not true commitment. It's more like playing around till you maybe settle down when you're a lot older.

A lot of people who say they have found the 'love of their life' will not be correct, especially when young and before kids. When it was not acceptable getting a divorce people might have stayed together, but the romantic love would many times be gone. Finding someone you can evolve well with through the rest of your life is rare.
Everything has an end, maybe at death, likely before. It's fine believing something is for life, but there are no guarantees.

If it's mostly about sex and ''oh the passionate love'' thing then those are the relationships that will end once that wears out and they both find out they have nothing in common nor have realistic goals. The sex part shouldn't be the whole cake of the relationship but part of it.

Asker you're right about that. I believe in finding the right person before you do that stuff anyways.
