It's important to take into consideration what people think about you and what you're signalling socially. To think otherwise is a little naive.

A baby will forgo food in preference of social interaction.
There's no place on the human body that you can touch, where we won't feel. It's because we are designed to communicate and respond to each other. Most of us would sacrifice our lives for a cause if we believe it will help the majority of people.
