I've NEVER forgotten a birthday or holiday before, I always make him cakes and handmade birthday cards and buy him gifts. I love holidays like that and he knows it.

I was anticipating his birthday all of June and then July crept up so fast... We've been arguing a lot lately and I can't help but to feel like that's really why he's so upset, bc this seems really out of character.

He said "you forgetting my birthday really shows your character" and I when I apologized profusely all he said was "whatever"

I feel terrible for forgetting but he's making me feel like the shittiest person ever.

This isn't like me to forget, I don't know where my mind has been.

Take him out to dinner, but don’t tell him where you are taking him. Also, don’t tell him why. Surprise him, and make him feel special. Explain that you didn’t mean to forget, and that you love him.
Make sure it is somewhere a little fancy. Not super expensive, but affordable for your pocket.

As for the arguing, you both need to sit down and try to get to the root of the arguments. There has to be mutual understanding and agreement.

It's hard for me to tell what he really cares about, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's because of all of the arguing you have been doing. And then forgetting his birthday is like one more issue between you two. But regardless, he handled it very badly. You don't respond to someone's apology that way, ever.
