Why is confessing not an option?

Trust me, you need to come clean to be able to actually forgive yourself. Otherwise it'll be with you forever.

Also, don't pretend like nothing's wrong - it never works - it will come out eventually because guys have a good sense for these things, especially in the long term.

When it does come out, it'll be much more bloody and traumatic than if you come straight out with it and explain why you felt the way you felt, why you did it. From there, you can move on like adults. Hiding is for immature children.

I have been cheated on multiple times by a previous ex and she never gave me a real reason for her affairs. But to be fair we weren't exactly a "perfect couple" (long story).

I would find carrying a big guilty secret like that difficult. Be honest with yourself and own it. You acted against the wind of your relationship, your partner, and the trust implicit.
You'll need to find peace with what you've done, accept it, and find a way forward. Hopefully it gives you new resolve to do better and treat your partner better.
