This is called wishful thinking. Not wanting to worry about what might happen in the future, we just blindly believe all will work out fine. In reality, the older we get, the harder it becomes to find healthy relationship opportunities.

When we're young (before we know ourselves), we're around a large quantity of potential partners, and it is easier for us to grow together and share new interests we discover together. As we age, we've already discovered what we believe works for us, so we become set in our ways and less flexible.

Also, people are more likely to already be in relationships as we get older, so the pool of potential partners shrinks. Not only that, people often become more self-serving as they get older. This may not make sense to many... who believe adolescents are the most self-serving people around. A lot of older people have already experienced pain or discomfort as a result of their previous experiences. This leads them to focus primarily on the voids from their past. They feel a sense of entitlement to get what they didn't get in the past. This means they're more likely to seek someone to be a provider of that past void (money, travel, extravagance, quantity or variety of sexual experiences, etc.).

Rather than blindly believe, keep your eyes open and nurture your contacts. Friends you develop now can develop into relationships you can savor when you're ready for a relationship. You don't need to commit to one person now, but be respectful and considerate of all. Let people know what you appreciate about them. You have nothing to gain by burning your bridges due to selfish insensitivity.
