You'll never have the power to undo his past. Just make sure his present is safe, meaningful and enjoyable. If he wants to talk about his past, listen without making any judgments or telling him what he should or shouldn't have done. Show him you want to understand his perspective by seeking clarification when anything could have multiple meanings. The areas where he suffered are probably sensitive areas for him, so don't push him into those areas, joke about those areas, minimize those areas or tell him to get over it already.
