I have been in all three roles of an 'open marriage' and so at least in MY OWN marriage can speak with firsthand experience. To silence both sets of my own and her parents we entered into a civil service union from a 'living together' arrangement of about a year. My new Spouse came to live with me to escape a domineering physically threatening previous boyfriend and our relationship was romantic but not impassioned. In our years together she experienced my romantic preferences but was very apathetic in their application so we agreed our relationship would be non-exclusive. Ours was largely a relationship to satisfy outside social pressures. Midst this time, through an employment opportunity running a transient bookstore, I was approached by a local married woman customer slightly older than myself who elected to proposition me.
I found this flattering and introduced her to my civil spouse. To make a long story short, this woman's own husband was a 'momma's boy' preoccupied with his career and paid no attention to his wife's unrequited passion and she resorted to philandering.

On at least two occasions we engaged in F-M-f trysts as well as numerous adventurous 'afternoon delight' saucy couplings until my friends with benefits for whom I'd been her 'side piece' moved away. Birth control and STD precautions were employed throughout~ Physiologically, anatomically we were the most anatomically satisfyingly compatible of any Paramour I've ever been privileged to have. <3 ;)

I'm curious as to why the two of you married to satisfy what sounds like annoying parents or why you chose to partner with someone you aren't sexually in tune with. You knew this before the ceremony. Sounds like you're more great friends than lovers and the other woman, you're great lovers. Didn't hear you mention friendship.

Nah. While they might be able to handle it I know myself. I want whoever I am with to be mine and mine alone. To me caring means no sharing.

If you want to be in an open relationship and don't want to be exclusive, then this would seem to be perfect. But if you're not looking for this, it sounds disastrous. Doesn't matter if the spouse knows or not. And how could you be serious about someone who can't be serious about you?

Sounds like they're married in name only. Also, sounds like they're using other people to keep some thrill in a marriage that doesn't have enough. And they always go home to their marriage. This is a kind of cheating that cheats everyone involved.

An open marriage is an oxymoron. That just means giving permission for your spouse to cheat, nothing else.
