To make it clear, I trust him and I know nothing will happen between them. I’m bothered by the intimate moments they share just with each other. I haven’t met her bc she lives a bit far. They would always travel together, cook together, everytime he drives 5 hrs to see her. He won’t stop talking about how much she means to him and how they share the same bed singing their favorite song together. He plays that song in the car and says he misses her. It makes me feel less important as a girlfriend and I cry myself to sleep thinking about this.

So, how to maturely deal with boyfriend having a girl best friend?

I think you should also be up-front with your boyfriend about how you feel.

To be honest... I'm someone who has had a female best friend... at most points in my life actually. But... this guy is PARTICULARILY close with his best friend.

I mean... I KNOW that every single girlfriend I've ever had dealt with this. But... I would like to think that I wasn't being quite as obtuse or insensitive to my girlfriend's feelings as your boyfriend seems to be.

Now, I assume that all the stuff you're describing (the traveling together, cooking together, sharing a bed etc.) is all stuff that happened before you and he got together. I'm assuming that these are parts of the friendship they've had... but IN THE PAST. If that's not the case... then... you've got yourself a problem. But I'm going to assume that it is.

So, you are absolutely right about "boundaries" and it being fair to expect your boyfriend to maintain appropriate ones... now that he's with you. Now, in reality, this is probably a non-issue. They share a bed, and there's (in reality) no chance anything is going to happen. That would be... almost incestuous. There's no sexual tension, nothing. I've been there, I've done that. WHEN SINGLE.

But, despite the reality that there is zero chance of anything happening... I would NEVER do that if I were in a relationship. That would be highly inappropriate.

You need to have an actual talk about boundaries between him and his best friend. You should feel confident that you two are on EXACTLY the same page when it comes to 'boundaries' or 'behavioral expectations'. That's a totally fair conversation to have. And I think you really should have it.

My guess is that a lot of the things that make you uneasy are things he and shared with his best friend in the past. But I would be willing to bet that IN THE PRESENT he is not close to this best friend in quite the same way, now that you're his girlfriend. I'm sure they're still close... but what I'm saying is... it really is the PAST that's making you uneasy more than how he's actually acting now... right? (that's a genuine question, not rhetorical).

You know why I might have been more sensitive to saying things about "how much my female best friend means to me" and yadda yadda yadda? When I was a kid. Like maybe 13... my "girlfriend" at the time (who was super sweet and kind usually) lost her shit on me about this. She basically gave me a long-angry version of what your central point was here: "it makes me feel less important as a girlfriend".

And I had nothing to say to that... except to admit that she was absolutely right, and to apologize for not having realized that I was making her feel that way. But I immediately saw what she was talking about. It's not like I didn't get it. I didn't SEE IT while I was doing it. But as soon as she called-me-out... I could see that I was being an asshole. I was just... oblivious to how I was making her feel (but I shouldn't have been. Even as a kid. This isn't complicated).

Since then, I've been a lot more conscious about what I choose to say about my female friend, and how that might make my girlfriend feel.

But... your boyfriend has no idea that you're crying yourself to sleep over this. Do you know how badly he'd feel if he had any idea how he was making YOU feel? Holy shit... he does NOT want to be hurting you. He doesn't realize that he is hurting you.

You're willing to be "mature" about this. And that's great. But that doesn't mean that you need to accept feeling like you're not the most important girl in your boyfriend's life. You have valid concerns, and you shouldn't be afraid to bring them up with your boyfriend.

You can't keep going on feeling like this. It's not fair to you. And it's not fair to him either. If he knew what he was doing to you, he would stop. You really need to talk to him. 🙂

One seems like a convenience, the other seems like a real want or even a need.

The best advice ever about relationships is this: "Never make someone your priority when you are their option". If you're crying yourself to sleep, that's what you're doing.

The key I'd say is to befriend her as well. This is what men often face with women that have best friends. It's one thing to have a friend of the opposite sex. It's another to obsess over them like that. It sounds like there's a very strong possibility they're hooking up when he goes to see her. This isn't normal and you're right to be bothered. I guarantee he knows how much talking about her like that hurts you. He picked you not her to date. There is a reason for that. And unless he's really dumb it's not because he has feelings for her that would serve him no purpose and actively hurt his chances with her.
At the end of the day unless something is actually going on. Ufff okay this sounds already way over the top, the part that they sleep together in the same bed would definetly worry me and i wouldn't want that, my boyfriend is doing such thing to me. Besides that i am not bothered at all if my partner has a best friend why not i realy dont care but where i start caring is when the lines of "normal" friendships are crossed. If I had a girlfriend and a girl best friend, I would keep at least a tiny bit of boundary with the best friend. Well it all comes down to this. Have they ever done it in the past and been more than friends? If yes, you got things to worry about. If honestly no you have nothing to worry about. If he’s a straight male he wouldn’t have tortured himself in the friéndzone for years on end. No way. Someone would have made a move at some point but that doesn’t sound like the case.

I have in here expecting to tell you that you have nothing to worry about, but the most concerning part to me is them sharing a bed. I have a lot of very close friends who are women, and sharing a bed is a boundary none of us have crossed. It is also concerning that he doesn't do talking about her.
