Normal just means common, not functional. If you want to smother your relationship, then control his choices. It's not about asking whether something is normal, but asking whether a behavior is likely to lead to your long-term objectives. It appears your jealousy is getting in the way of your relationship. Jealousy is merely a projection of one's own insecurities and feelings of inadequacy, and you won't feel more secure by focusing on the behaviors of others. You say you know he's not cheating, yet you are concerned about the plumbing any of his associates have. By being friendly to other women (not flirting with them), he's showing he respects women. Would you prefer a partner who constantly puts women down? As long as he isn't prioritizing them over you or showing inappropriate behavior toward them, making an issue about this will only push him away from you. You can show curiosity and get his perspective on his friends being primarily female, but never judge a person's choices. No one's saying you have to stay with this boyfriend, but he's not a lump of clay, eager to be molded by you.

u Did he have these female friends before you met him? If so, you should accept a potential partner as they are and not expect them to change for you.
Do you really want to ask him to choose between his friends and you? If you do, the person who delivers the ultimatum is usually the one who loses when the choice is made.
I'd say it's normal in that this is a common thing. However, it's controlling and not good. You ask if it is absurd: I think yes. If you trust him, then trust him.
