Should I ask my boyfriend who's coming to stay with me for 3 weeks to share expenses during his stay or should I treat him as a guest?

I'm mostly talking about grocery shopping. Should we share grocery shopping expenses since we both have to eat? And should we also coordinate between house chores during his stay?

The judgement on the comment section is ridiculous, None of you know me personally or my boyfriend but you're so quick to make assumptions that he's a simp or this or that. I'm just asking a freaking question I expect answers yet most of you answer with your stupid assumptions FFS!

The splitting costs is another subject, like I’m big on treating guests like guests. Of course not acting out of my budget, but making sure I can even afford to host them. That means I’m saving prior, writing down places I want to take him and getting the pricing on that, utilize Groupon and any other outlets to save. For instance, you can check to see what’s going on in your city, often times the events or activities with me low cost or free to the public.


The only exception I would have is if he is visiting regularly then yeah, there will need to be some sort of splitting costs involved. I think his preparation will speak to the sort of man he is as well. For instance, while visiting my ex almost always paid for things and I had to insist to pay lol. So ultimately while I think the plan should be to host your guest, it’s bonus points if he brings money of his own.

Ohh okay, why is he living there? I only ask because if he’s down on hard times, trying to move elsewhere or whatever then sure you can ask for some help with groceries and chores, but being mindful of its finances that landed him having to live with you in the first place.

I think that not only should he pay at least half of the expenses (I'd pay for everything, but I'm a weak beta male wimp), he absolutely should volunteer to do at least half of all the household chores, laundry, etc. Again, if I were in his position, she'd know ahead of time that I'm going to pay for everything, do all the housework and wait on her hand and foot, but I'm an exception, not the typical guy.

I think you need to ignore the rabid feminists that answered. It's just a visit, either he offers or you just treat him as a houseguest. If it were longer, of course he should be contributing, but I wouldn't even think about it being only 3 weeks. Just enjoy each others company.

I will tell you this. When I visited my girlfriend I offered to pay for everything, but she was in school and I make decent money so I wanted to be kind. I was not impressed when she asked me to help with dishes. I told her that because she was driving me to the airport and wouldn’t have time to do both laundry and dishes that I would, but that I don’t generally think asking guests to do dishes is polite. I would accept any offers he makes graciously but do not ask for help, at least for the first week or so, it might rub him the wrong way

In my opinion, groceries should be provided by the host. Cleaning should also be done by the host. This is just basic etiquette of hospitality.

Restaurants are different. When eating out, each person should pay for their own meal.

i’d say treat him as a guest. unless he makes a mess then he should clean up that mess. but when i’m dating someone and i’m over i help out with dishes and cleaning up but that’s just me I don't know about others.
