If someone wants a relationship with you, they will make time for you regardless of their career or anything else going on in their life. Clearly he is not interested in having a relationship with you, but I doubt it solely because of his career. It’s just an excuse to make rejection less harsh on you.

I’ve heard from my physician colleagues that medical residency is very grueling. Most of then said if they weren’t in a relationship already they might have waited till it was over to start one. In your case I don’t know if this was a new relationship or an established one. I mostly know about hospitalists, general surgeons, family physicians and ob/gyns. I’ve known a few neurologists but considering it’s brain science I imagine it could be pretty intensive.
The more successful someone is, the less time they will have for interpersonal relationships.
