For me it was four. I think this could be close to the ideal.

Zero is great for followers of some popular religions but I have no religion.

One gives that one person weirdly enhanced relevance compared to the wife/husband as this is the first and the only comparison.

I think a few relationships are useful to learn the behaviors of getting along with a partner. This also helps identify potential abusive behavior in the marriage better than an inexperienced person could. However, at some point it is getting too much as well.
