The couples I know that lasted had two things which are:

Financial security and kindness.

My doctor is good looking and rich and his wife is ugly and obese but his wife is the sweetest woman in the world and makes everyone feel like a dearly cherished family member. He stayed with her because nobody is as kind and caring as her.

I know another doctor and he married a girl that was average looking and average intelligence but she was the kindest person you could ever imagine.
