I have a lot of close male friends but I never had such feelings with any of them, we were really just friends. But I had a friend who felt this way towards me and that's why our friendship broke down. Maybe the way he said it, maybe the timing, I don't know, but guys, please don't suddenly say a sentence like "I want you to be my girlfriend" to a girl you are very close friends with, it's ridiculous!

I think for guys it's more common to catch feelings for girls although it can happen to anyone.

If someone catches feelings for someone the friendship you had before instantly dies and it can go a few different ways.

The person who fell in love is scared about losing th other person as a friend and doesn't want to do anything about their feelings, this is probably the worst case for the one who likes the friend as they wouldn't be able to get closure or move on, the friendship becomes a trap for them since if they aren't directly rejected or the other person gets married they can't move on.

Another way is the person who likes the other person does want to do something about it, this could make the friendship awkward and uncomfortable for either side and if they get rejected the healthiest thing for their mind is to move on, they do suffer more having their feelings broken then the person who just lost a friend, and the best thing you can do is to let them go.

The last way is if the other person feels the same way, then the friendship becomes a relationship. This is the happy outcome but also the rarest outcome. But if you don't feel the same way towards them, the best thing you can do is just to tell them directly.

I have been on the receiving end of all 3 of these and I have liked someone too who didn't like me back as well.

Yes, a few times. Usually when I'm friends with a guy, it's just that- a friendship with no feelings involved.

But when I was in my late teens, early 20s, I had a few instances where I fell for some close guy friends.
And yes, eventually I did tell them how I felt, knowing damn well I'd regret it...

Most of then were super nice about it and told me point blank they just weren't attracted to me in that way, or thought a relationship wouldn't work because they viewed me as a friend or sister.

Needless to say, all those friendships ended. Not because they rejected me, but it was just... awkward after that. I needed to move on, especially when they started dating other people, or they felt like they had to "tiptoe" around me discussing their love life. Or I just talked to them less and less as time progressed.

I was friends with a lady for over 12 years. Her and her ex and me and my ex used to get together and even when we moved away, we stayed friends. Years later, she and I were both single and we would get together periodically, have a great evening with drinks and I would sleep on her couch. I did secretly wish she would open the bedroom door and invite me in. One of those nights I mentioned that I was disappointed that I had a nice camping trailer but would not go by myself. She loved camping and said let's go next weekend. We packed up and headed out and had a great day setting up and enjoying the lake.

When it was time for bed, we headed into the trailer and I asked her how she wanted to set up the beds. She came up to me and said, she knew this was going to happen and that was our first kiss and then we were all over each other. I mentioned that this was the start of something great or we were ruining a great friendship.

We have been together for over 30 years so it was the best thing that could have happened. She jokes thst we knew everything about each other so it was straight to the bed, no need to spend time getting to know each other.

If you never take the chance, there is no way of knowing how good things could be.

There was one girl I was really close friends with wanted to ask to be my girlfriend. I don’t know how she would have reacted, but never said anything about it cause she always had a boyfriend or some guy she was into and I was clearly a “friend zone” guy.

Two years ago she married her boyfriend and they have twin girls about to turn a year old so I guess I’ll never have a chance now. Kind of weird to expect a guy to just not go for a girl he likes, so what if she's his friend. Its way better if the guy tries to hint to her he likes her and see if she gives him a sign before he just says i want you to be my girlfriend, but don't say that a guy shouldn't make a move on his friend if he likes her. I don’t think you should’ve dumped him as a friend just because he said he likes you. As long as he didn’t keep hitting on you after you said no or something, I think you should’ve just let the friendship continue on the same way it used to. But that’s just my personal opinion.

I am crazy about this friend but they r taken so i would never say anything. I just feel strong emotions mixed with sadness when i hang out with this person and i feel like kissing and hugging them so tight but i can't.
