What's the point of being in a relationship with no intentions of getting married?

Depends on why you want to get married. If you want to get married for the status or the ring then absolutely no point. If you want to get married so you can claim half of everything in a divorce also no reason. If you want to get married because you want to spend the rest of your life with the person. How does a marriage affect that? Wouldn't a smaller ceremony between you and that person where you declare your undying love and commitment be wiser as you don't have to spend a bunch on an engagement ring? Then a wedding ring? Then a venue, food, after party, drinks music, cake etc. Also Wouldn't have to Then go and register with the government so they can take some extra money every year from you. My wife and I married and i did get the engagement ring and the wedding ring and all the other bells and whistles. did not declare it to the government because the government has no business being in peoples relationships.

This exactly. Long ago in the past, the categories were either a serious relationship or hook-up/friends with benefits. In the past, those that were in serious relationship dated for the purpose of getting married within 2-3 years.

@DanaPonds the likes always being stretched. Sex before marriage was shameful, then it’s if you really love each other, then it’s after the third date, and anymore it’s…. Just hook up with whoever.

At least if someone is honest about just wanting to hook up. They’re not wasting someone’s time who doesn’t want that. But some people will waste years of someone’s life. And not even really want to be with them.

Older people are more likely to seek out relationships without marriage, as they don't want the complications marriage brings. This can be true for both men and women. Those of childbearing age who don't want marriage are generally more interested in playing around than developing anything significant long-term. Sometimes their priority is their career rather than a relationship.

Everyone is different, though, so seek an understanding from the person uninterested in marriage. What you learn from them may make sense, especially if they have their life planned out and aren't ready to take on all they'd want to take on in a marriage. They may know when timing will be right, and it isn't now.

I personally would love to have a significant long-term relationship with a woman, but I'm living on social security, so I can't afford to be anyone's provider or take on legal or financial complications. That doesn't minimize what I bring to the relationship as a partner. There are people who truly are more interested in a quality partnership over handouts.

Absolutely no point. Any person that says they don’t want marriage is a huge red flag to me because it’s usually followed by some negative outlook of dating

@jacobjordan there’s a very very small acceptance for that pov but I still think it’s a red flag that a man wouldn’t put his legal views of marriage to the side for the sake of committing to you meanwhile willing to risk other things that have certain consequences also.

for example marrying a guy so when you divorce you get half his stuff is a very good reason to not be legally married. marrying a guy for the ring status title is also a very good reason to not be married. not marrying so as to not declare legally and have to deal with the extra taxes and charges every year is also a good reason to not marry. my wife and I are married but we did not register because the government has no business being in peoples personal relationships

@jacobjordan it’s not about ring status, it’s about the fact that those men can usually commit to everything else but being committed to you and that’s concerning and a red flag. We all have different experiences. I’ve tried the whole route of dating not to marry because of an ex and the outline of him not willing to was just a warning sign that he wasn’t a good partner to be with in the first place.

@jacobjordan see but this was my point whenever a person that isn’t for marriage has an explanation, it’s usually backed with a negative outlook of dating and something potentially ending. I don’t want to be with someone that pictures us not working out before it even happens.

Which is just 1 of at least 3 possible reasons. And I absolutely agree that one should never view a relationship as having a potential to fail. The other 2 listed reasons are still valid for not having the legal marriage. Now another issue which potentially is far worse than the above. Is how the US has altered marriage. Right or wrong the increasing presence of just how absolutely decimated some men get in divorces has made a lot of younger men very wary of getting married. I think as a society we need to strive to get marriage back to the commitment it was. To love and cherish one another in sickness and in health richer or poorer until death do us part. If that level of commitment comes back then marriage will regain the importance it once had.

There are always negatives to everything. been in marriage can be a negative and not been a marriage can be negative, its perception of the individual.

I don't think just cause someone doesn't want marriage, is not a major red flag, because for example we could get married and after a couple of years we get a divorce. Marriage doesn't guarantee a successful relationship, or a long lasting relationship. All marriage is conditional contract between two people.

The whole the point of relationships is to share your life with someone, instead of doing it alone.

Some people seek companionship and emotional support without feeling the need for a formal commitment like marriage. They may value the connection and shared experiences without the legal or societal implications of marriage.

There is only a positive been in a relationship with someone, regardless of marriage, you gain support from all angles, depending on the individuals values.

I'm gonna tell you a thing that I've heard some men say which is gonna sound very mean. I'm not choosing for their point of view because the reasoning is straight up mean and selfish.
That being said...

Some men will tend to say that if they don't get married, the girl will do more efforts to keep him. In all ways.

I don't say that "all men" think like this but i said "some".

Other guys would do that simply because of fear of the complications if things end up in a divorce. And nowadays there is a very high percentage of marriages ending up in divorce.
