So he may be thinking like it's better to be meaner in front of world & closer in 4walls or bedroom. So that people's evil eyes will stay far from ur sweet relationship. Depends on the relationship with their friends. If their friends are the type of people that think it's cute that your partner wears the pants in the relationship and has the power to treat you how they like, they could be trying to impress them. It all comes down to insecurity on their part.

I had a friend who would be really nice and we would get along but as soon as his "cooler" friends would show up he would start treating me like shit. Obviously they are someone with no backbone, I would not date someone like that.

Partners should never be mean to you. That's it. The fact that they are presumably being mean to you is already a red flag.

In front of friends, being meaner (to me, who has had friends do the same) is a sign of abuse. I had a friend would be nice to me when it was just the two of us, and then mean when around other friends.
