I've never dated anyone with a learning difficulty to my knowledge, but I have dated someone with a physical disability. It didn't dissuade me from dating him at all because I liked him for him, with his disability simply being a part of the whole human being, however, it was clear over time that he was very uncomfortable with it, to the point of hiding and not wanting to go places with new people, and of course, who was I, that had not dealt with that my whole life, to judge the psychology of that per se, but it became increasingly difficult to have a social life and staying inside all the time was not my jam, so we broke up. I think what someone else said, is it's the way you handle it and yourself. You have to acknowledge it and the inherit challenges with it, and have someone that understands that, but it can't define your life to the point where it's crippling you from living. Sense of humor usually breaks the ice, and finding someone who gets you.

Learning disabilities are not necessarily the basis for why I might get turned off. It’s more about how they handle the disability and their behavior towards others. It also depends on the severity of the learning disability.


I’m more likely to date someone with a severe learning disability who laughs about it and is respectful to others, than someone less impaired but who is angry and spiteful about his condition.
