If this is one off thing, allow him to reply back to you and see whether it was big deal not to be open and transparent with you. If you believe it was, then that's fine. If not, then address it with him and share your opinion.

Personally I believe if your in a so called relationship, you want to share everything with the person you say, you have feelings for, both the good and bad times. This whole give him space crap, only applies, if you know something has affected him and he need the space. Otherwise, he should tell you what's on his mind. You shouldn't be left in limbo wondering how he is doing or have doubts.
