I suspect it just works the same way as when a woman says it. I have only ever used the platonic line on someone if i am 200 percent sure I will never change my mind. Saying I just want a platonic connection is a nice way of saying. There is something I will never tell you (because it is cruel to say). But that something or somethingsss is always going to make me not choose you to date. So I would say. Do not get your hopes up. But hey maybe this is just me.

I asked a longtime close friend out, he turned me down saying his love for me was platonic, he still showed physical affection for me until I got engaged then it was short hugs and eye contact only.
