Why would my boyfriend tell me my butt looks bigger in leggings?

My boyfriend usually taps on my butt in a playful way and says big booty which makes me feel a little self conscious but good at the same time. I like it more when he says I have a bubble butt without referencing my butt size. I know my butt isn’t big but it’s little more than a handful. I was curious why he felt my booty was big so I asked him what made him feel that way. First, he said I don’t know it’s just big to me. It seemed like he was avoiding going into details. I wanted more details why so once I asked further he then said my butt looks big when I wear leggings. And then he said my butt looks bigger when I wear leggings and said he notices that men seem to look at me more when we go out together with them on. Why couldn’t he tell me my butt looks nice and voluptuous without my leggings on? I know my butt is not flat. For some reason I feel confused and insulted. He said he has no idea why he said those things but realized they didn’t sound good after he thought about it. He apologized and made it up to me. He said he wasn’t trying to offend or hurt me but it came out wrong. But those comments are still stuck in my head and I’m left feeling insecure. How do I move on from this and not look into it too much.
