What’s the different between “girlfriend material” and “wife material”?

At a recent event, two guys were arguing about whether or not this one girl was girlfriend Material or Wife Material. When I asked what the difference was their answer was even more confusing than their conversation…

Mind you, one guy has been happily married for 40+ years and his three grown sons were at the event. Meanwhile, the other guy is on Wife 3 with a pile of daughters who were also at the event, and so considers himself an expert on what wife material is (though arguably if he’s on Wife 3 his knowledge is simply through trial and error 😂).

So I put it to you guys…

What’s GIRLFRIEND material to you (for a long-term girlfriend/so) and how is it different from WIFE material?

Kind hearted, feminine, faithful, low or zero body count, empathetic, not competitive with me, believes a couple is a committed team who are committed to each other before all other thing is (except God).

I have never made that distinction, but I would guess that

"girlfriend material" focuses more on the "trophy" aspects of the relationship: is this girl pretty enough to give him bragging rights with his buddies? Will she be eager to satisfy his sexual desires? Is she fun NOW?

"Wife material" would focus on will this girl be easy to live with in the long term? Will she fit in well with my family? Will she be a good mother to my children? Will she be a loyal companion though 40 or 50 years or more of a relationship?

Some girls have open and obvious deal breakers, like a whiny voice, or being crass and vulgar. So not everyone can be fun for a few weeks.

Some guys might call a girl "girlfriend material" meaning they would date her just long enough to get sex from her.

The 32 year old (current me) a girlfriend is a woman that proved that she’s different from other women on a surface level. She ticks most if not all of the qualities that I’ve discovered over my years of dating that I personally desire from a partner.

I never made a distinction.

From the time I was 16, I only dated girls whom I found physically attractive and were good people. They were sweet, we got along great, and we became mutually infatuated.

I had plenty of friends. But I also wanted a female best friend to hang out, go places, do things and share experiences with. To hold hands, laugh, be romantic and have great sex with. I wasn't looking for someone to clean my house or wash my clothes.

I didn't start out thinking that I wanted to marry her. I figured we would have to be in an intimate relationship for a while before I could possibly know that I wanted to spend the rest of my entire life with her. I would have to know that I could trust her completely.

So it was about compatibility and, most of all trust.

I figured that marriage was forever, so I wasn't in a rush. And I wasn't driven by a desire to get saddled with kids.

For me, they're the same thing. A girl I'd consider dating is a girl I'd eventually consider marrying and if I can't see myself eventually marrying her, then I'd rather not date her. They should check off on the same aspects.

Compatibility is the main thing. Does she have similar views, interests, sense of humor, way of thinking, communication style, where she wants eventually be in life, sexual compatibility, etc. If she checks off on all of those aspects, girlfriend material could be wifey material.

For me, it is the same. If someone isn't good enough for me to want to be together long term and exclusive, then I would end the relationship. i have the same expectations for both and I would treat her the same whether she is my girlfriend or wife. And if I found out anything that would make her unacceptable as a wife, it would also make her unacceptable as a girlfriend too.

Girlfriend material is someone who's mainly just sexually attractive but also has a good enough personality to make you want to be around her more often. You're basically just good friends with benefits, that's literally all a girlfriend is.

Wife material is a soulmate. They bond with you on so many deeper levels than just sex and friendship. It's someone who respects you and is willing to submit to you, someone you obviously want to be with for the rest of your life. For me that means she's traditional, respectful, respectable, cares about my family, good with kids, knows how to cook and clean, matches my vibe, and then on top of all that she's also attractive. She doesn't need to be a stunner, but she's attractive.

How do you make a distinction between the two? If I have someone I consider to be my 'girlfriend", she is also someone I would chose to make my wife... else I would not be seeing her anyway... For whatever reason, some 'boys' seem to have a different view of the two, and I cannot fathom why?

Something to do with the 'double standard' that many 'macho' men hold about who is a 'good lay' and someone who will be a good mother... SAD VIEW to take of women.

Perhaps it's a maturity thing... or a generational thing. Many of the 40+ group agree that girlfriend/SO (wife) are basically the same thing for the very reason you just outlined.

(I think the distinction IS probably tied to some sort of objectification of women as being basic breeding vehicles for men rather than being people... I'm always surprised by those who openly hold that sort of perspective, but they're very prevalent these days.)

When I was 12 (true story) a girl I was babysitting (who was 5 years old and already being raised to think of women as being no more than baby breeders) looked at me and said "Oh, you have good childbearing hips." Well I'd say... I don't believe in such thing as "long-term girlfriend material".

I'd have pick a girlfriend to make her my wife later.

Ofcourse it'd be fun in the period of getting-to-know-each-other. But the idea should be to get married. Otherwise you'd be keeping her on a line. And that's not fair and it makes you a bad person.

Thats my take on it anyways. Then again... I'm old-fashioned like that.

oh perhaps i interpreted the question wrong then.
Indeed it is a "dating" period.
Right before the "dating period" there is ofcourse the "flirting and picking someone" period also. The very beginning.

But yeah, the "girlfriend phase" I consider indeed the "dating" period.
But during this phase the idea should be to know the person better with the final goal to go over to engagement (fiancé) and then marriage.

My interpretation of saying that someone is "girlfriend material" would be to consider such a girl to only be interesting enough to have and enjoy as a girlfriend, but without the intention to marry her. That's the practise that I consider a cruel act.
If after a period either sides start seeing that they don't want to marry, they should just move on to find another partner for marriage.
And that's why I said I'm old-fashioned, cuz nowadays people will just go into boyfriend/girlfriend but never get married, while many times one of them DO want to settle down and get married.

Anyways, "girlfriend material" should just be the first phase of becoming "wife material". And if it doesn't work out in a reasonable period, just break up and move on to find someone else.
Even though "reasonable period" doesn't have to be 1 month, it doesn't need to be 5 years either. Usually you know when you found the person you wanna spend the rest of your life with.

That person is NEVER gonna be perfect (just as yourself is not perfect).

Actually, it's something that a close family friend struggled with for a long time -- like five years. His girlfriend couldn't have kids but he loved her so much. She actually suggested they break things off so he could go find a woman who could give him that... but they ended up getting married and adopting. I guess whatever works for each person.

I’ve never had to, tbh. In my own life, I don’t give or accept the boyfriend/girlfriend titles unless I can see the guy is as serious as I am about creating something long term/permanent.

Based on what the two men at the event were saying, though, there’s some sort of distinction.

I also remember the two major guys in my life saying the same thing to me… that they knew just by looking at me that “just dating” wasn’t an option. I confess I wasn’t 100% sure what that meant, but both were apparently thinking marriage-track from day 1…. It’s why I’m asking you guys now for your opinions. ☺️
