Why are there so many single women with children in the black community?

I'm just curious to know. I don't have any Caucasian, Hispanic, or Arabian friends that have children without a husband. But for my African American friends, over half of them who do have children don't have a husband. Why is this?

American culture systematically broke up African slave families for 100s of years, and when slavery was abolished former slaves had to fend for themselves in a hostile land. Black men were shunned, making it difficult for them to get jobs and make money, particularly in cities. That left Black women in charge when it came to providing for the family. Black women could get cleaning jobs, etc., because they were seen as non-threatening. That gave them power within the families and the community.

And so it continues to this day. Many Black men still find it hard to get decent jobs. Many turn to crime because they have few options, and disproportionately end up in jail or prison. Faced with that frustration, Black culture for years made it okay for Black men to impregnate Black women and leave, which is why you still have many Black children being raised by grandmothers.

What broke black families was LBJ's "Great Society" program - which introduced Welfare - but only if there was no man in the house. Just prior to the Great Society in the mid 60s, despite the issues you point to, 82% of adult black women lived with a husband. By 1990, it was only 26%. Black women chose a government check over husbands.

This happened to white women too, just at a much lower rate initially - though white women have nearly caught up after another 30 years.

Because most of them don't want to raise kids. Just smoke weed and shoot people all day. And sleep.

cause the black community does only preach but not live virtuous values. this isn't a racist statement. just an objective observation. it's scientifically backed too. people in the black community are less faithful and loyal than people in any other community. they're more likely to commit crimes than any other community. and they're more likely to be economically weak than any other community. so all that compounds to families having more troubles and being more likely to break.

mind you: even scientifically speaking, this is not at all a race issue. it's a habitus issue. so habitual lifestyle choices and learned behaviors are the issue behind this. not race.

and if you wanna make the argument about "hurr durr but there was slavery in america 150 years ago", all i can say is: the jews had a holocaust that decimated them and effectively enslaved them only 80 years ago. they're doing great today. so blacks have no excuse.

A culture and almost expectation of cyclical generational poverty. There's no expectation of men sticking around. There's no stigma against having multiple fathers in a family. There's no sanction, judgement or shame from the woman's family. Motherhood is prioritized over marriage. The incarceration rate and limited job prospects of men make them almost expendable if not an outright liability.
