OMG! That happened to me about a year into dating my boyfriend! My mom bought herself, my boyfriend and myself, tickets to the opera for my birthday. Of course, he didn't wanna go but he did it for me and I told him he would have to dress up, at least dress pants and a dress shirt, because all the other people will be dressed formal/semiformal. His response, "I'll wear black jeans and my red button up shirt! Besides, I'm sure I'll be the only guy there"! I bet him dinner and drinks that no one there will be wearing jeans. I was right! I didn't care, because he did go and did look handsome. lol

I don’t know. People should be able to express themselves however they want but I might be a little annoyed if I had gone to all the trouble to get dressed up and they just wore a T shirt and jeans.

I cannot abide by this. I've never been in a relationship with someone like this and never would. People like this feel so entitled to just do whatever they want, because "oh shrugs, it's me, everyone else needs to just deal with it." Uh, no. It's a respect thing. If someone invites you and clearly spells out that the event is formal, and you show up in jeans and a tee you found on the ground, you're showing a high level of disrespect towards your host. The world doesn't revolve around you all the time. If you just cannot stomach the thought of dressing up for a few hours of your life, don't come, period. If these people can understand "wear black to a funeral," or "wear a uniform/suit at work," then they are aware that dress codes do exist and have proven they are capable of understanding that there is a time and place for everything.

I’d be personally embarrassed, but I’d be furious at him, that’s just disrespectful! If you are invited somewhere and it’s formal dress (a black tie event), and you show up in the most casual attire imaginable, you're just being actively contemptuous towards the host, the event, and the invited guests, all of whom would rather not be wearing what they are, but they do because the respect the host, the event, and the dress code!

My partner is exactly this and our social circle is pretty much aware. We’ve been to many formal events and he’ll show up with a nice white t shirt and black jeans or black chinos. It’s his personal style and he said he doesn’t feel comfortable in suits. He puts the effort in to look good and I like that about him. People around us don’t seem to mind either.

Even though my wife would never do that because she hates wearing jeans, I would be embarrassed that she came to the event dressed like that
