Is there a way that I can break through with my boyfriend's mother?

I met my boyfriend's parents. His father seems to like me just fine and is very nice. That said, I get the feeling that his mother doesn't really like me. She is kind of "stand offish" around me. I have tried to be very nice to her. My boyfriend notices it too. He is not sure what to do either? Does anybody have any ideas about how I can do something that would help me form a better relationship with a lady who may be my future mother in law? Maybe you have had or seen this issue before. Any help would be appreciated.
