I’m stumped. My boyfriend and I are both in our 40s. We have been together for a year with ups and downs. I love him and can easily see a life together with him. He was laid off about 6 months ago and seems very unmotivated to find a new job. I have tried my best to be supportive but I find myself losing respect for him. I have put myself through graduate programs, held down two jobs while being a single mom. To me there is no excuse not to have a job at this point especially since he is a father too. I want to be fair but I find myself asking if I can really see a future with someone who can’t do what it takes to get through the hard times. Am I being unreasonable or unfair? I worry I’m putting my own personal standards onto someone else. I don’t want to lose a good person just because they are going through a difficult time.
