Why are some people so competitive?

I heard that it comes from a place of insecurity on their part. Is that true?

I haven't figured that out. It could be narcissism or insecurity. They seem to want to be the center of attention and make everything about them. My guess is they received a lot of praise from their parents as a child and want that same feeling as often as possible.

I'm only competitive about things I really care about. I can't imagine why people would get competitive over something that doesn't matter, but I find a sense of comfort in trying to be the best at something I put in appropriate time and effort to learn.

now if they take shortcuts to that greatness, then yeah they may be insecure

Not necessarily. The world isn't a fair place, and you're not going to be handed the best. You have to work to attain the best, and compete with those who aspire the same goal.
