I never delete phone numbers so I still have my exes' phone numbers on my phone, but my history would show that the last time I called any of them was many years ago. There are no flirty text messages to exes or any other females, no suggestive pictures received from other women, nothing to explain. However, my phone is password protected because I use it for work purposes and I have texts to and from clients; I need to protect the confidentiality of those communications. If my wife was suspicious of anything, I would unlock the phone and show her whatever she wanted to see.

But at the same time, one feeling I never allow myself to feel is that I’m being “monitored” by anyone else. I’m an adult human, I answer to nobody, I’m here for you if you want me, but you have to take me as I come. I don’t change who I am or how I move to be more palatable for others. That’s a long way of saying “I’m going to have whatever I want on my phone, it shouldn’t be anything you find offensive anyway, and if you are offended, that’s an “US” problem, not a “me” problem. The fact that someone else doesn’t like it, whatever it may be, doesn’t inherently mean it’s wrong in a vacuum, it just means we’re wrong for each other.”

My number one thing I’m zero tolerance about in a relationship is jealousy, accusations of infidelity or accusations of having designs on infidelity…. I'm just not doing that, absolutely fucking NOT. Been there, done it, bought the t-shirt, and I’m never going back. All the “who is that girl who said hi to you?”, “how do you know her?”, all that suspicious shit…. death penalty, at the first sniff of it. Just not doing it, I’d rather be alone.

So that kind of covers the majority of reasons why a partner would want to look through my phone in the first place, making sure I’m not talking to other women romantically, or looking at other women, or whatever. It’s not something I do (and my current situation, due to long term illness, I’m on an indefinite “hall pass”, and I don’t use it…but given that, she doesn’t really have a leg to stand on in that department, by her own suggestion and allowance, so it’s tough to envision her wanting to go through my phone in the first place, because if I was, she doesn’t want to know), so it’s kind of moot. And I extend the same courtesy, I’ve never checked through her stuff.

I don’t believe in the whole “open book” thing in a relationship. It certainly depends on the nature of them and how they’d affect the other partner, but as a general rule, it’s ok to have secrets, it’s ok to have a private side that even your partner doesn’t know. Trust people or don’t, but asking them to repetitively prove it just doesn’t seem like a good time. Not much worse than getting guff for something you aren’t doing, haha.

People try to heartbreak-proof themselves in relationships by thinking you can force fidelity, force honesty, force commitment, but you just can’t. If you’re already with me, I’m offended right off the rip that you’d have suspicious thoughts of me like that.

So you can check through my phone if you want, but I’ll be packing my bags while you do it. That person has too much work they need to do on themselves before wading into being part of a relationship.

I have things they have no right to see. Not because I don't want to be open and honest but because I know they can't handle what they would find- naughty pictures, pictures of guys I've hooked up with that are much younger than I, and my journal with many descriptions of my encounters and my emotional ups and downs with love. I can't see how access to any of that would help my relationship. In fact I do worry about it as I've always been open with my phone in the past. I potentially would get rid of all the pics. Just not my journal.

My only reason to probably "hide" my past comes from talking on here. People here have told me that a partner has no rights to invade my privacy. That being in a relationship doesn't mean they can access your phone, your diary, your bank account etc. That your past is yours and you owe nobody explanations.
I'm certain guys have never told me a lot of things they have done. I'm certain all guys have secrets they don't share. Do I need to know details of the first woman they loved or obsessed over? Is it helpful to our relationship in the now to know that he (maybe) mastubated over his mums friend or cousins panties? Or has in a moment of weakness fantasised something weird or kinky?
I know the hang up here is more about sex and casual sex than secrets in general. I didn't say I wouldn't be open about fact I've had many partners or casual partners.
