A surprise for my boyfriend with a total let down from him?

I went to his home to wait for him as a surprise. After an hour there, I decided to call him and I told him I was here at his home. He responded with “Why?”… I told him I wanted to surprise you… then he said “it’s not a problem but don’t ever do that again please”
So, my question is should I continue to wait or should I go home now? My feelings are hurt but I don’t know how to deal with it … any advice I need some serious advice

Thanks to all of y’all for the amazing responses… I ended up staying. I apologized to him for not being respectful of his privacy. He told me it wasn’t a problem he just likes to know first. I was able to cope better with all y’all’s feedback.

You are trying to do something nice and your efforts were rejected, so of course you feel hurt. If you've been dating any length of time, don't use this as the sole reason to break up with him.

Let him explain but don't buy everything wholesale. You learn so much more about people over time and get to know their tender areas. As far as an answer to who it may have been & what does it mean. People have every right to keep their lives private but that usually leads to madness. It woould need to be something he didn't wan't you to know about. It could have been a sailboat he's been building for both of you. Or you could find body parts in various states of decomposition.
I understand your motives. Think back in week by week segments and try to give each day as big of a degree of mindfulness. Walk yourself slowly through when you had seen him before and if anything seemed difrerrent. When you feel positive about someone/something

The question is why is he being a jerk when you’re trying to nicely surprise him? Was he just reacting weirdly to an unexpected even, does he have something going on he doesn’t want you to know about, does he have a phobia about furry, etc. I’d leave and tslk to him about it later.
