Do men listen to their wives or their mothers?

I think men should always listen to their mothers. A new wife can be found but a new mother cannot be found. What do you think?

Listen to my mother and father? Yes. But allow them to dictate to me once I am an adult? Absolutely not.

My mother gave birth to me. My parents raised me to the best of their ability. But, regardless of their good intentions, they are not infallible. Parents can teach us valuable lessons, but they are not necessarily wise. They can make mistakes.

I've known people whose parents were not great people and had some really messed up values.

Plus, society continually evolves and ideas, values and perceptions change. Sometimes older generations cling to the past. I'll give some personal examples.

My parents were Catholic. I was raised Catholic. But when I became an adult and did lots of research into things like religion, history and science, I became non-religious even though that worried my parents.

They were raised during the period of racial segregation. They never raised me to be racist, but they had deep seeded negative attitudes toward some races and ethnicities. Through my own personal experiences, I lost all bigotry and judge people on an individual bases, not on their race, ethnicity, religion or anything else.

My dad fought in WWII. He hated the societal changes of the 1960s - anti-war protests, music, hair and fashion trends. When I let my hair grow out in high school, he was very upset, but I had to be me and do what I wanted to do.

Parents are just people and it's okay to disagree with others on issues. Fortunately,, my parents loved and supported me regardless of any disagreements.

I married the woman I chose to marry. My wife and I didn't ask for parental conscent. Fortunately, her parents liked me and my parents liked her. We got along great with each other's parents. But my wife and I were independent from our parents at that point and just lived our lives.

When we married, we pledged to love and to honor, for richer or poorer, through sickness and health, until death do us part. We are the most important people in each other's life. Our parents were on the periphery. We loved them, talked to them and visited them. But they were in no position to dictate to us.

I valued advice and criticism from both my mom (and dad) and my wife, but I made my own decisions.

I think that boys should always listen to their mothers. I think men should repect their mother, but certainly not always listen to her.

With a wife, you work together to come up with some reasonable compromise.

Men should no more listen to their mothers (as in, follow their desired course of action)

Then grown women should listen to their fathers.

Once you're an adult, you're supposed to choose whose advice is worth listening to. I love my mother. But I don't always think she would know what's best. How could she? She's not me.

fortunately, my partners were independent adults and they listened to all people they cared about but made decisions only with people involved... :D

so in our relationships we were the only ones involved... :D

and I'm happy my son thinks the same, he talks to his fiancé not to me about their stuff :D

Both relationships are important and should be respected. A mother gave him life and raised him, and a wife becomes his life partner—his support and future. It’s not about choosing one over the other, it’s about balancing both with love and understanding. Neither should be disrespected...

Oh, now we're treading on some classic love battlefield ground! As someone who's happily married and loves both his wife and mom, I can say it's about maintaining a delicate balance and respect for both relationships 💞. The trick is understanding that both voices matter for different reasons, but in intimate matters, the partnership you build with your spouse should take precedence. It's a partnership game, not a tug-of-war! 😉

... you think people should listen to someone just because they gave birth? That's hardly a reason to listen to someone as the only qualification for that is having sex.

I chose my wife based on her understanding, level headed mindset, and being reasonable. I'd much rather listen to her.

@Melanie31 Personally, my mother was not a good sounding board for advice. She did not know how to make good decisions regarding me as a child nor as an adult... I loved her dearly but not because she was a good source of decision making or for advice in leading my own life.

I think HEARING both but listening to the one who has the best idea shows an independent mindset that serves HIS and thus his family (up and down) benefit.
