Do you expect your partner to understand your emotions everytime?

Not EVERY time — and nor do I always understand another person’s feelings every time.


As an example, there’s a couple I know who just broke up. I know both people well enough to know they’re BOTH amazing and would have worked well together in general.


However, the gal is afraid to turn into her mother and have kids like her siblings so she’s actually gotten “cold feet” a few times and now has the reputation of being “the runaway fiancée” — and that’s what folks now call her bc she’s done this to 4 or 5 guys. 🤷🏻‍♀️


All she did was ask for a bit of space to think. But as soon as she did that the guy stepped back (physically) but panicked and doubled down on his communication and sent multiple messages every hour on the hour till she felt completely overwhelmed and broke things off.


He didn’t understand why she needed space. He figured he WAS her safe space.


She expected him to understand without really explaining what she meant by “space” and why she wanted it, for how long she wanted it, etc. The use of the term “space” was confusing to the guy at many levels….


I’ve seen guys do the same thing. Shit down after a silent thought process they didn’t share with their girl… and POOF. Relationship/friendship over. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is the hardest thing I've had to learn. I notice that I tend to project my expectations on my current partners, where I expect them to feel the same way as I do. So, in certain cases Ill be upset, and Ill expect him to know why (because surely, if he put himself in my shoes, he would feel the same way). I have come to learn that everyone is different, and it is unfair to expect someone to feel the same way about things as you do. Im trying to be more openminded. :)

I still sometimes get my feelings hurt, but I also realize that he didn't mean any harm. I still bring up how things make me feel, which is important. But I feel less anger now.

Yes. But only because the way I feel makes perfect sense to me. That's not to say I'm right in expecting this. I am willing to explain. I don't expect anyone to read minds.

But... I feel how I feel because it makes sense according to me. That's why I feel that way. So, yes, I do tend to expect my partner to understand my emotions every time. I have never thought about this in that way before.

It's not so much "expect" it's more the fact I'd like him to try to understand where I'm coming from and my emotions, but not everyone is ever gonna understand you and your emotions anyway.
