What's more important, having connections or protecting your peace?

Hi Guys and Gals,

I was chatting with a friend today and said that I'd rather protect my peace and cut a few people loose than to have a million connections that make me LOOK popular but require me to allow folks in my life who are just wasting my time and energy for some selfish reason of theirs.

What's your opinion?

A Few Good Friends , should be the title of a movie---spin on  A Few Good Men .  You need people of depth and commitment in your life. Not a host who are floating around you and are available to do nothing with you or for you.  Friendship is about spending quality time with people, talking, going places, just hanging out doing nothing... seeing a movie, having dinner. That kind of stuff.  Think of being a child in a sand box. You, your friends just quietly sat there slapping together sand castles, shoving each other around, on occasion, but doing your own things, side by side. You were PRESENT for and with each other. Those are the people who matter in your life. Not that people you see occasionally don't matter. I love the cashier at my Whole Foods and one or two at my Winn-Dixie. I always say hello to them and chat for a few seconds. Helps make my day. Same with the greeters at Wal-mart. I know a few of them recognize me, as I recognize them. One said, "LOve your hat!" Those kind of encounters matter. Nice thing to say! So, it's the QUALITY of connections. NOT the NUMBER. High quality is the best.

There's a saying in Spanish, and it says, "Dime con quién andas y te diré quién eres," basically tell me who you hang out with, and I'll tell you who you are. To me, it's very significant because your friends can be a reflection of your character and values. Not entirely, sometimes, but choosing to associate with certain people can influence you to think the way they do, you probably already do since being able to connect with someone requires a significant amount of shared traits.

For example, if you have a negative friend, that might not mean you are a negative person, but as you interact with them, you can begin to absorb their attitudes and perspectives. As much as you try not to, there is still potential for influence, and it can become subconscious. And absolutely no one is perfect, but some people can be negative or bad enough to attract a lot of negativity and problems for example and that’s usually where I keep a distance. However I can understand someone needing connections for business purposes, which is a little different since these aren't necessarily "close" connections, and in this regard it's understandable.

I voted inner peace pretty quickly and easily, but I don't know... as a guy with pretty much no connections myself, I already see this side. I haven't achieved my goals in life as of yet.

I think that it's okay to prioritize connections over inner peace until you've achieved all that you want to (without being greedy about it). And then once you're where you want to be in life, you can cut off whoever doesn't keep your inner peace.

Of course, if you never want to let anyone disturb your inner peace at all, that's all fine. But some success requires a little sacrifice.

A book I read called Distracted by Maggie Jackson. She describes exactly what you are talking about. The book explores the effect that technology has on our lives. People can have a thousand Facebook Friends but not one single person that they can discuss personal issues with.

For me always protecting myself and internal peace is utmost important. Yes I am aware of the consequences of this but this how I have always been.

I think there are people who you'd like to keep and let the peace get disturbed. And some that you would choose peace over. Both are important options in my opinion

If you don't have your peace of mind, your connections will sooner or later deteriorate only. So peace of mind is necessary for the person to be able to give his 100% into anything

A million connections in this context has a very surface feel. That seems more like an acquaintance versus something more textured. Texture can have peace. At least my “connections” tend not to be mutually exclusive of one or the other.
