My Boyfriend Always Criticizes My Style — Should I Change?

I’ll be the first to admit it: I’m not a fashionista. My style is… let’s just say “a little old-fashioned” (or “grandma chic” if we’re being dramatic).

The thing is, my boyfriend often tells me I don’t dress well. Sometimes it’s in a joking tone, but other times it feels more like a real criticism. He’ll say things like, “That outfit doesn’t do you any favors,” or “You’d look so much better if you wore X.”

Part of me wonders if I should try to dress more the way he likes, just to keep the peace. But another part feels like… shouldn’t he accept me as I am?

Have you ever been in a situation like this? Would you change your style for a partner, or stand your ground?

Compromise is important in a relationship. How about trying, a few times, to dress like your boyfriend wants, while maintaining your sense of style at other times.

Put the shoe on the other foot. If you thought you boyfriend would dress differently, would you want him to at least try it... for you?

Saying he would like you to wear certain things really isn't criticism, it's him expressing his opinion of what he likes to see you in. My boyfriend and I tell each other things like that all the time. Although, it would be nice if he would compliment you on certain things you wear that he does like. Saying certain things "don't do you any favors" is a little hurtful... I don't see anything horrible about you changing your style a little for him, he'd probably do the same for you. It's not like he's saying you're fat or have ugly eyes or something you can't change. Try it, you might actually like it!

Do you have any friends who dress more fashionably? Could you ask them to go shopping with you. by the way, don't overlook resale shops in affluent areas. You can often find great things for not a lot of money. My wife has a closet full of designer labels she found in resale and thrift stores.
