How important is compatibility in relationships or marriages?

Besides falling in love, how important is compatibility in a relationship or marriage?

For instance I imagine it would be hard for an atheist to be with someone religious, someone wanting kids with someone that doesn't or realizing the person believes in spanking kids while you're against it.

EXTREMELY…. Obviously no two people are exactly alike there at some point will be differences that need to be worked through but at the end of the day if the relationship isn’t happy due to something it isn’t happy.

Number one it’s not just personalities, politics, and religion though those are important discussions that need to be had long term. But also what two people are seeking out of a relationship… Some people are simply looking for something different. Some people can be amazing people but are wanting different things out of a relationship that makes them incompatible.

It is so very important for me because I like to do all kinds of things and if im dating you then fir sure I would want you there with me. I love being spontaneous. I love just doing crazy. Having similar/compatible morals and values is critical. There are plenty of things where you can have differences of opinion - matters of taste, such as food, movies, music, or fashion, but if your morals and values aren't really similar, the relationship is not going to last.

That's why morals, values, and life goals are the most important criteria when picking a partner. How attractive they are, what their status or income is, etc. is far less important if you want a sustainable relationship. You don't need to have all the same hobbies or anything like that, but if you don't share the same priorities, don't have similar ideas in how your children will be raised, or how to be responsible with money, etc., then your relationship will implode before very long.

A core requirement BUT people are adaptable and IF they are both capable of adapting themselves and committing to the relationship, there is absolutely a chance that love, happiness and fulfilment cn be achieved as long as the needs of each are met and that they are able to be compassionate toward each other and the relationship is the key focus for both.

I think some things can be compromised, for example the religion one, I have seen many couple where one is monoethist and other is atheist because these are personal things, another example is veg non veg.

But if something is directly related to the partner and both are unwilling to compromise, then you should not procced. For example having kids are primarily relationship goal topic, so both of you should decide it before marriage.
