He doesn’t clean up after himself. What do I do?

Question

We broke up but still living together for one more year until the lease is up I’ve been cleaning up after him, if he leaves his clothes on the floor, doesn’t put dishes away, just leave things the way they are and it will sit for weeks and weeks unless I do it. We share the children and I don’t like getting the house into a mess. I have confronted him about it and he said he’ll do it apparently when he feels like it. I’m worried when guests come to my house or I don’t want my children to look up to a DAd and think it’s ok to constantly leaving mess around. The house would have been a mess if I don’t clean but I don’t want to keep cleaning for him and I’m not his mother or girlfriend anymore.. reminding we are still leasing for another year. what do you suggest?

I’d shame him if I were you , using his lack of care , respect and parenting skills as an example to your kids of how not to be. Not in a hurtful or attacking way as he likely wants this reaction whilst continuing to do what you need to do to keep the house clean and in order. Don’t rise to his obvious attempts to get attention from you. Leave his clothes where he lets them , he clearly doesn’t have an infinite supply and can’t afford to replace them.

But do this while getting yourself out of this situation , warn him that his lack of attention to hygiene is putting your kids your kids at risk and your concerned for their welfare when he is around them alone … next step social services.

Make every attempt to get out of that situation , that’s just a much bigger problem waiting to happen.

I suggest you leave. You don’t want the kids to look up to a man who is like this because then they start to think it’s ok. But I’m sure on the other hand the kids see what you do on your end, which is put up w it. So your sons or daughter or s combos toon of both are still learning this. Your daughter is learning to put up w it. Your sons are learning to treat a future partner like this. So this isn’t just him, it’s both of you. I also wonder how come you didn’t see all this in the beginning? Unless he was doing everything in the beginning then stopped because of the separation? You’re both on these so you’re both paying 50/50?

Once you see something on the floor, go ask him to pick it up please. Every time, and you will basically be teaching him, it might get tiring, but either that or he provides and pays all the bills so that you can focus on maintaining a clean home and picking up after him. Because you are enabling the behavior by picking it up right away, but if you keep it there you will have a messy home. Another good idea is putting a chair in your bedroom that is specifically designed for him, anytime he feels like throwing something on the floor, he can use the chair.

Don’t do anything you’re not comfortable doing. You’re not his mom or his maid.

It’s good to do the kitchen and common rooms, but if he contributes nothing to the process (or worse, makes a mess and leaves it for you) then talk to him and state that this isn’t ok.

Word of advice start throwing his clothes away if he just leaves them on the floor and act like you don’t know what he is talking about if he asks you. Hopefully he gets the hint that you aren’t his maid and it’s not Your responsibility to clean up after him , when my ex stop cleaning up after herself , and I told her to clean up her mess , and she didn’t , I waited for her to leave and then I started throwing her shit away and playing dumb. Therapist, he should be on GAG asking his version of question. you sound sane and rational.. but some people are not and are clean freaks. When there is opposite training... e. g. he trained to be a slob and you trained to have everything clean... friction. You sound normal and sane, I'm just saying have seen extreme clean freaks.

you either accept it and manage it or work to change his behavior... or you leave.

You should not worry about guests but about the kids is fine.

you could also hire help to cleanup if he works hard and it's just not his thing. some guys do ok outside but inside their moms did everything and they are lazy. money well spent.

You need to stop cleaning up after him entirely. This is the only way he will feel the full consequences of his actions. He'll either have to do it himself or live in a mess.  Better still, you make a clean break and leave this slob alone.

What does "we share the children" mean? Are they only one person's children but you are maintaining the veil of family for their sake or do you two have children together and you have it in your mind that equal responsibility is not the default and therefore requires some reciprocity?
Who is paying what proportion of the lease? And/Or who's decision was it to end the relationship? The person benefiting from an arrangement and/or the person changing the conditions of an existing arrangement bare more responsibility in maintaining/adapting to the circumstances.

That reminds me of my ex-wife. Living together for a while after you break up is torture. Somebody's gotta go for your own mental health. Unless you feel you will get back together. Otherwise, once you guys start dating while living together it's gonna be a nightmare.

Since you are just 2 people living in the same space, and are pretty much stuck there he knows it and doesn't care.
You can't kick him out, you can't leave, you are already broken up, so there is nothing much you can do about.

you gotta find leverage that you can use against him. something you can do that really ticks him off. and them give him the option to avoid you doing that thing by being tidy. don't do it passively aggresive. just straight up tell him this is what you're gonna do and that he has the control over you doing it by cleaning up.

If you can't leave yet, hold on to your sanity because there isn't much you can do. Yes you share the space, and he should be respectful enough to clean up after himself, but as you said, you're no longer the girlfriend and you're not his mother, so pull out a calendar and start marking the days until you are out of there.
