That's a traditional marriage. My parents did that. The parents of ALL the kids when I grew up did that. Where I live, the majority of marriages with kids STILL do that. It's less common when there are no kids, but it still happens.

Division of labor is a good way of doing things. It works quite well. Two income households are less efficient. They have a lot more expenses. They have expenses directly related to working. They tend to eat out a lot more, which is very expensive. They have more clothing costs, gas costs, etc. They pay for daycare. Daycare is a term I never even heard until I was in my 20s. They pay people to do a lot of things that people used to do themselves.

Keeping up a house is a lot of work. If you have two people working full time, it's hard to keep up with all the work just doing it in the evenings and week-ends.

If you mean like, going to dinner as an engaged or married couple, it is a different thing, the money is usually kind of pooled in some sense. But in our case, he does always pay for most things including meals when we go out, however most of my pay goes into a longterm savings fund for both of us. And I do not just mean “a lot” of it goes into that I really mean like three fourths goes into that. So it is just a different thought process when he pays for dinner and stuff, we are in it together.

Here in New Jersey there's still a lot of old school traditional households where the wife has a career she pauses for 5-10 years to raise kids, the husband makes a shit load of money and her job is mostly for leisure/personal development / she'll drive the family crazy if she's home all the time.
