There’s a couple that I know that are together for over 3 years now and right from day 1 the guy insists that they spit the bill 50/50…. they’re in a committed relationship way past the casual dating phase.
For the guy to want to split bills is it because he doesn’t trust his partner or is it because he’s inexperienced?
(this is his very first serious girlfriend that he’s ever had and he lives on his own).

Or is it because these days both people chip in their half because the cost of living has gotten expensive?

Are they living together? If they are living together then 50/50 is usually what couples do so they both have their own spending money to do whatever they want to do , with their money. Well that’s up to her if she wants to stay in a relationship like that , I would think a girl would be turned off by that , and no longer be interested in him , if he is that stingy with money. When I ask a girl on a date , it’s my treat to her so I don’t expect her to pay a dime , because I am asking her and feel it’s the respectful thing to do , if a girl called me and asked me on a date and she expects me to pay, then I would be turned off and consider her a user and not a girl I would go on a date with again.

Neither. It means he respects himself and sees logic. In these days, women have equality. If they have equal pay, why should men still have to pay for them? Is it because they think their time is more valuable than the guy's? If there's equality why do they still expect men to be the same only ones to initiate? I'm a firm 50/50 kinda guy. But... I have no problem paying for a first date, and I'm not a stickler about it to the degree that this guy is. It's a principle I apply when it makes sense to me to apply it. This guy sounds like he applies it always.

If they are earning approximately equally this is perfectly reasonable. Either they can split costs or they can take turns. Personally I would rather take turns than to be constantly dividing expenses. However, I know two happy couples that live this way.

It's because when divorce happens, and trust me, with you being a woman it's guaranteed to happen, he doesn't want to be caught paying you alimony for the rest of his life. If you have a career and earn as much as he does, and you split the bills, stealing his money becomes less likely.
