Here’s the breakdown of what I’m worried about. On December 14, we had this conversation.
She sent me a long message explaining that she’s been extremely exhausted physically, mentally, and emotionally. She’s been working almost every day, including overnight shifts, with very little rest. She’s also under pressure because her permit is only valid until August 2026, so she’s focused on securing her future, tuition, and finances. She shared that her mom’s cancer has progressed, with new cells found near her collar and backbone, and that she’s been carrying all of this quietly, which affected how she showed up in the relationship.
She apologized for making me feel neglected and said the distance wasn’t because she didn’t care, but because she’s overwhelmed and trying to stay afloat. She said she feels very alone right now, low on energy, and can’t always show care in the way I want or need. She thanked me for being honest, respected my boundaries, and said she wanted me to understand the full picture—not as an excuse, but as the truth. One part that made me wonder if this was a breakup was: “I care about you, but I can’t always show it in the way you want or need at this moment, and I don’t want to pretend otherwise.”
I replied with empathy, acknowledged how much she’s been carrying, reassured her that I didn’t doubt her care, and said I didn’t want to add pressure. I told her I was there when she had the energy and offered to Uber Eats her medicine, which I did.
On the 19th, I brought up a few times that I couldn’t view her Instagram stories because I was anxious about the distance. Now I’m wondering if repeatedly mentioning that undermined the understanding we had or made me seem more anxious than I intended.
Last week, I sent a gentle check-in: “Hope today has been gentle on you. Thinking of you.”
