My roommate is autistic, how can I nurture our communication?

So I just found out that my roommate is autistic. I would say he's a level 1, high functioning, and I've been living there for 5 months and just found out. I have two roommates, him and his fiance (my bestfriend). She and I were alone chatting the other night, and she mentioned that when I told a joke the other night (which she understood to be a joke, as she told me the same joke earlier), he took it quite seriously and was bothered by it. It has since been resolved, and he was made aware that I didn't mean anything by it. He also doesn't like to bring things up and will let things fester, according to his his fiance. I didn't know this, and Im ok with this, but I know how difficult communication can be, and I want everyone to feel comfortable.

I would like to know everything I can about making my roommate feel comfortable in our space, and to promote good communication without being forceful/controlling, etc. If there are any other things I should know about autism, I am open to learning about it.

As a side note, I have ADHD and I tend to miss certain social cues/rules.
