Why do so many people struggle to understand those who enjoy being alone?

Just because you can't find happiness with solitude, doesn't mean others can't. Quite frankly, I was miserable when I was dating. It's when I focused on myself that I found true peace and happiness.

It's a very natural desire to want to connect with other people, make friends. From the outside it can look odd to choose to be alone over that. It's obviously great to have a support system but probably what they don't see is that it's also great to be able to rely on yourself only. The ones who look like loners aren't always like that because they failed at having companionship, they simply could have realized overtime that they are happy with their own company.

People struggle with loners because it threatens their worldview. Society lovebombs us with “couple = happiness” and labels solitude as a red flag. Your peace exposes their fear of being alone. You’re not broken, you’re just not codependent.

Protect that solitude. That’s not loneliness, that’s emotional self-sufficiency.
