Have your life experiences made you more guarded and less trusting?

For a long time I was always respectful and kind to people that were respectful and kind to me as well, I was always the kind of guy that pretty much wore my heart on my sleeve and I am still that way today , but unfortunately I learned by being that way isn’t necessarily the right way to be because there are a lot of assholes on this planet that will take you for granted and backstab you and blind side you , so I learned through the years that I have to protect myself from those kind of people and sadly it isn’t easy to do , why it’s hard for me to fully trust someone until they consistently show me respect and honesty. Why it’s important not to always be too nice and friendly to others. Someone can treat you like gold , by always being respectful and kind to you and before you know it , they are backstabbing you or taking you for granted , Girls’ have done this to me and some of my male friends’ that I considered great friends’ , so I live my life with a shield protecting my heart which is hard for me to take down at times. And I honestly hate feeling this way but I know my safety and sanity is the most important thing to protect myself from ever being betrayed or backstabbed or broken heart ever again. So has life experiences molded you this way as well? If not? Start doing so before you get taken for granted by some asshole
