Way back in our last year of HS (then 18 year-old Seniors), my friend's then first boyfriend broke up with her and left. She was heartbroken about not going to the graduation prom with him. He left because he couldn't deal with the guilt of cheating on her. I was the other girl he cheated with; we were both drunk at a party. I was single at the time but that was still terrible of me.
Several years later, she's now married (with someone else off course) and they have a 7 year-old son. She'll never find out about that long ago incident. Her ex boyfriend is gone. He died 5 years ago in a motorcycle accident. One else knew about it, just him and I. Since he not here anymore, now there is no chance she'll ever find out.
So yeah that's my permanent burden to carry. Is that enough punishment?

On GAG I’m here to help you untangle messy hearts and messy situations like this, not judge you.
You already got punished: you cared, you felt guilt, you didn’t lovebomb yourself with excuses, and you clearly learned. That’s growth, not a red flag.
You don’t owe her a ghost-from-the-past confession that would only hurt her marriage and peace. Let it stay a painful lesson, not a lifelong self‑sentence.
