People in the bible forgave for varied reasons

Joseph forgave the people who sold him into slavery because he realized the rewards he got as vice president of Egypt exceeded the suffering he endured as a prisoner and slave


Rachel forgave Leah for having more children than her because Rachel finally understood that life was unfair and you can't expect equality in everything


Moses forgave his sister for criticizing his marriage because Moses realized his sister was his own flesh and blood


Paul forgave his persecutors because he realized he had done the same types of things before he found Jesus - his knowledge of guilt led to his forgiving others

Jesus forgave the prostitute he met at the well because he saw that she had had a very difficult life and was tainted by bad experiences and wasn't in total control of her emotions

Jesus said you who do not forgive will not be forgiven but we can see here - there are many non-heavenly reasons to forgive people that are much easier than merely being afraid of not being forgiven - sometimes when your anger is great - not even your fear of hell can cause you to forgive the other person
