People in the bible forgave for varied reasons

Joseph forgave the people who sold him into slavery because he realized the rewards he got as vice president of Egypt exceeded the suffering he endured as a prisoner and slave

Rachel forgave Leah for having more children than her because Rachel finally understood that life was unfair and you can't expect equality in everything

Moses forgave his sister for criticizing his marriage because Moses realized his sister was his own flesh and blood

Paul forgave his persecutors because he realized he had done the same types of things before he found Jesus - his knowledge of guilt led to his forgiving others

David forgave Saul because David saw that even though Saul loved God

Jacob forgave Reuben for sleeping with Bilhah because Jacob saw Reuben's virtue as his firstborn song and having high potential to bring him glory and honour

Jesus forgave the prostitute he met at the well because he saw that she had had a very difficult life and was tainted by bad experiences and wasn't in total control of her emotions

Martha forgave Mary for not helping with the chores because she respected God who had commanded her to humble herself before her

Hagger forgave Sarah for stealing her womb in a marital rape because Hagger had a vision of God's love for her and her son and the everlasting rewards being bestowed on her

The Egyptians forgave Israel for destroying their crops because they were afraid of further punishment by God and that is why they gave them gifts before they left

Sarah forgave Abraham because she valued her relationship with Abraham more than her ability to punish him for what he did

The unjust judge forgave the widow because he was tired and did not want to worry about punishing her since it would drain him of effort

Jesus said you who do not forgive will not be forgiven but we can see here - there are many non-heavenly reasons to forgive people that are much easier than merely being afraid of not being forgiven - sometimes when your anger is great - not even your fear of hell can cause you to forgive the other person

If I remember the numbers right. Forgiveness is a huge theme in the bible and it's something that I believe is important to practice. A great example is where one man was forgiven a great debt but when someone that was unable to pay a small debt back to him he did not forgive them. We have to remember, if we would like forgiveness for the things we have done we need to also forgive others too
