Our relationship ended for multiple reasons but one of the things that prevented it’s success was that he asked me what first drew me to him and I said it was his looks. He told me he did not want to be with a woman who choose looks over personality.
Today I was studying how God hates the worship of graven images and I began to think that when God says not to be superficial, this involves not basing a relationship on superficial things.
The guy I used to flirt with at work was attractive and charming and funny, but he was also humble and honest and intelligent and respectful and hard working and innocent and kind. He had a disability and I wanted a guy with no experience with woman. We would have been perfect for each other.
My point is, my connection with him involved his personality and not just his appearance, and had he changed his look, I would have still liked him. So upon examining the use of idolatry in the verses, I now realize God forbids basing a relationship on superficial things. But it’s okay to enjoy the superficial, if the person also has character and compassion and humility and consideration for you.
