Sikhism is a religion that sees cutting of hair and beard as a major sin. Therefor many Sikhs never cut their hair or beard. Some have never cut their hair in their entire lifetime. Many also wears turban. Ironically the majority of them lives in hot countries like India, so I'm wondering how they cope with the weather. How Do Sikhs Deal With Hot Weather With Uncut Hair and Turbans?
One of the 5 K's is Kesh; unshorn hair. A Sikh never cuts or trims any hair, as a symbol of respect for the perfection of God's creation. But another of the 5 K's is the Kangha- a comb which is supposed to be worn only in the hair, under the turban, at all times, that Sikhs use twice a day to clean and remove tangles from the hair (with many Sikhs also washing their hair twice daily as well). This is a symbol of the equally sacrosanct importance of maintaining cleanliness and good hygiene. Combing their hair reminds Sikhs that their lives should be tidy and organized, and the sacred comb is a symbol of not just accepting God's creation (both themselves and the world in general) as perfect, but also of their duties and responsibilities, as members of the Sikh Panth, to maintain it and tend to it, in order to keep it in the best condition and prevent the world from falling into chaos, decay and turmoil.
I had short hair all my life, then in college I grew it down to the center of my back and stopped shaving. I never noticed a difference in temperature between long or short hair. Well, except that the beard protected my face from sunburn.
I've tried both buzzcut and shoulder long hair. The buzzcut was much cooler, but the shoulder long hair was much warmer. I lives in a cold country, so warmth is an advantage. So I guess it's individual.
I assume they get used to it. My beard tends to come and go multiple times per year. If I shave it in the winter, the first time I go outside is like being hit with a blast of ice. It really does act as an insulator.
As for the turban, it can actually keep you cooler. When I did construction work in 100-110 degree heat (38-43), a lot of guys wore a hat or bandana to keep their head cool. Although I wouldn't want as many layers as a turban.
They threaten to stab hot weather with their ceremonial dagger so it stays cool around them? Yeah they mostly live in hot countries and as such they have experienced it for their whole lives and they most likely are just used to it They also probably do not wash it as often as you may wash yours we in the western hemisphere tends to wash too much because we have been taught the natural scent of humans is bad so we wash and wash and wash then cover it with deodorants and perfumes
Actually, Sikhs wash it more often than you do. Amritdharis (fully ordained Sikhs) don't just commit to keeping their hair unshorn, they commit to combing (and washing, whenever possible- i. e, whenever there's a water supply) their hair twice a day, every day.
@DevilsAdvocator I did not know that Interesting Not really good for hair but I guess maybe it can be cooling if it is wet? I live I Scandinavia and have long hair so I more have had an inverse problem have had my hair freeze a few times in winter heh
@DevilsAdvocator Ehm... if you have long hair it takes longer than two minutes to wash it unless you really aren't doing it thoroughly But yes the drying bit does not matter in the heat
I hasn't take the time when doing it, but I guess it takes ca. 10 minutes. Especially if you use both conditioner and shampoo. I lives in a cold country, so I do use a hair dryer.
There is nothing xenophobic about it!. Since he doesn't know things, according to our culture!. His mistakes are forgiven as long as his intentions are pure.. But I am glad that someone is researching and doing his homework very well.. Very few foreigner are actually able to walk out of their first world final fantasy to see. @Nik1hil, I'm from Norway; a Nordic country and we've a different culture here. School doesn't learn us much about cultures outside of Europe. Especially not Asian and African ones.

And yeah in summer we don't see temperature below 23°Celsius for 2 months Where I live, not even during early twilight.. It touches 25 degrees and bounces up to 55 degree during day
Yeah!.. I have sat in that temperature many time, Even broomed the roof and done house chores that involve being in sun.. The key is to realize are you working fine.. Stay rehydrated!.. Drink glucose.. Sweat like a pig.. Like you are about to melt,. But it's dry weather so even sweat evaporates,.. Make sure if you stop sweating than go to shade and relax!.. And Don't overwork!..
You just need to dodge the Sunstroke!..
Trust me that summer is worth it! The stronger the summer the more sour!.. And good Quality of Mangoes, Tamarind, mint, lemons, watermelons we get,. And blend of amazing spices and rehydration drinks we get to taste..
My favorite are mint leaves blended + lemon squeezed with naturally cool water from earthen pot!.. Add some salt!.. And smell and drink the flavor,.. And some other combo are worth dying for.. Made from tamarind, cardamom.. If nothing helps that red chilli it is.. Make spicy food!. And eat... Those spices will make your hot and sweaty 😉
