I don't believe a lot of things in the Bible, but there are good and true moral principles in the Bible.
I don't for one moment believe The True Creator would command Abraham to sacrifice his own son, for example.
Loving your neighbor as yourself is a good moral principle, and the Golden Rule is the correlated to the Silver Rule. Problem is Jesus stole that from Confuscious and didn't cite his references; a fact they don't tell you in Sunday school, but I learned about 15 years ago on another debate forum.
. Most of the Ten Commandments are derivable through Objective Reason without citing a Bible.
The First and Second commandment are derivable through the Cosmological Argument.
Not murdering, raping, stealing, adulterating, lusting for someone else's wife/husband, etc, is a good idea and is derivable from the Silver Rule.
There is no obvious day which should be considered a Sabbath nor any other Holy Day, and the Christian Apostle Paul even said so in his New Testament letters.
Note that the Tenth Commandment forbids lusting for another man's wife, but does not forbid desiring his daughter, assuming she isn't already married or betrothed. Forbidding all sexual desire for a future partner would be ridiculous and obviously is not the intention of the commandment, so what some radical pentecostals and other cultists do, such as swearing celibacy of no real reason or even castrating themselves, that's INSANE and is not the intention of the commandments.
Note too:
Pentecostalism is against Wisdom and against Paul's own teaching. Paul actually FORBADE "speaking in tongues" unless you could guarantee interpretation. So what Pentecostals do in their "praise and worship" services is both INSANE and against their own Apostles' commandment Paul said NOT to speak out loud in tongues, because people who hear you will think you are INSANE.
So even if you hypothetically had the "Real" Gift of Tongues, you aren't supposed to speak it out loud unless you or someone listening can guarantee an intelligent and accurate interpretation.
Thus Pentecostalism is a fraud.07 Reply- +1 y
Any complex enough mortal attempt to convey Truth will end up having flaws in it no matter how careful the authors are. Do you know Collegiate Math and Science texts often have a section in the back of the book which corrects errors in previous editions of the book? My Math text from College even had a section called "Lies my Calculator Told Me," because Calculators CANNOT solve most Limits correctly.
A Limit and a Discreet solution are not always identical. No matter how many "9"s you add behidn a decimal, there will always be a missing trailing 1, so the sum is not "1", but a calculator will "lie" and tell you the sum is "1".
Anyway, the point is writing a collegiate text that is 100% truthful and accurate is difficult to do, especially since we don't always know with 100% certainty the truth of what we are writing in science or math. - +1 y
Let's take a statistical analysis of God's existence.
In Statistical Data analysis, you must assume one missing data sample on both ends of a sample in order to compute all of the terms correctly.
This implies a statistical analysis of God's existence is REQUIRED to assume One God already exists, whether "Observed" or "Unobserved", as a bare necessity to represent any data at all.
IN other data sets, this is like trying to record the maximum winds of a hurricane. We can't really do that. We can only report the maximum winds that actually hit an anemometer. The real maximum sustained winds and the real maximum gust MAY be higher than that, because the real maximum in the storm is not guaranteed to hit a man-made anemometer.
Likewise, the True Creator is not required to reveal Himself to you at all, and he's certainly not required to "fully reveal" Himself. Therefore, to derive The True Creator's existence, YOU are required to use some integrity and actually SEARCH for the Truth.
So if you statistically analyze the existence of The True Creator God, the assumption of the existence of ONE God is in fact the Default position, required by the laws of Statistical Analysis, because it happens to be true. You must assume at least one instance of the phenomena which has not been observed.
The mere fact the term "God" exists strongly suggests GCB worth searching for exists. Hence statistically we expect to find exactly ONE God, and with no deviation. - +1 y
A Created being cannot be the Greatest Conceivable Being, because that would make the Creator Greater than the GCB, which is a contradiction.
I can prove there can be only ONE God, and so all polytheistic religions are complete falsehoods.
God as we understand Him is The First Cause. There can only be exactly one "The First Cause" and exactly one "The True Creator" therefore there can be only exactly one The True God. All other alleged "gods" are either complete falsehoods (Polytheism), or at best misguided attempts to represent the real one (Judaism, Islam, and Christianity for example).
The Real God is provably Monotheistic, again primarily because there is EXACTLY ONE "THE FIRST CAUSE".
For you Trinitarian Christians, there are not three First Causes and there are not "Three person's of God". The term "Being" and "Person" have the same basic meaning, so the GCB is not "three persons" He is One Person who is Almighty, Omni-Omni, and Transcendent.
The property of Transcendence is provable, as the properties of Logic and Understanding are Transcendent, which proves The First Cause is Logical and has Understanding, as only a property closely related to the First Cause could express the property of Transcendence. Namely, the Creator uses Logic and has Understanding, therefore The Creator is an intelligent MIND.

+1 yIt’s not just conservative’s who cherry pick the Bible. Anyone who looks to the Bible as an authority will selectively quote only those verses which line up with their world view.
The Books within the bible was written 200 years after the death of Christ so is imperfect document at best. Not that it has stopped anyone who wishes to impose moral authority as claiming it as the absolute word of Christ.
But to answer your question, conservatives cherry pick the Bible because they have too. The bible says nothing against gays or abortion and yes it is claimed Jesus hates both. What is really happening is that modern day fundamental control freaks are using a document many people take as an authority to impose their own hatred on the world by cherry picking the most stilted versus of the Bible. Cherry picking the Bible is the only way conservatives can ignore the openness and beauty offered to us by the master of love, Jesus Christ.10 Reply

+1 yWhy does any religion cherry-pick the shit out of their stuff? Like Muslims worship, a guy that was fucking a 9-year-old, was a bandit and waged war. Both the bible and koran have instructions on how to beat slaves, women, and children. I read those books and try to pick out the useful stuff myself and ignore that bullshit that wouldn't fly in today's world. I feel people that read those books and justify their causes from them do the same. Just like our modern communists that just ignore Stalin killed more people than Hitler.

It's more to kind understand what is right and wrong but their way of saying it.
Because people need to belive in something to have fate in it. And to be able to blame someone for all the stuff they kind mess up and blame the big guy cuz yo it's easy to blame the gods.20 Reply2 Timothy 4:1 - 4
New International Version
In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.00 Reply
+1 yI think they're trying to find a philosophy in there that guides their life. It's an ancient collection of books and translated endlessly down from ancient scrolls. But it's an insight into humanity passed down over generations. I found it too boring to read though. Beyond the dark parts, I struggled even with Genesis with the list of names.

I'd like to try to get through some of these books so fundamental to Western civilization. I have a sorta similar problem with Shakespeare although the difficulty to me with Shakespeare is understanding the prose. The difficulty I find with the Bible is to avoid dozing off while reading the prose.

The Bible claims one man and one woman were created from dirt abut 6750 years ago.
We know from real science that Mitochondrial DNA proves there were at least FOUR very different and very unique women in the first generation of modern human beings, and considering how many of the first generation could have died due to war and famine and plague, etc, there might have been more than 4 mitochondrial lineages at some point. Anyway, Mitochondrial DNA proves the Biblical Creation story wrong.
Sorry, but the Bible is full of so many frauds and fallacies that it should be banned except like one copy in each Museum just as evidence that someone tried to tell the truth, but got almost everything laughably wrong.
I believe in God, and I believe in Special Creation, but the Bible is not God's Book.
God's Book is a Physics Book "Fundamentals of Physics Extended Edition".
Read it.
