Probably because the old testament is more provocative than the religions it has spawned generally speaking. There is good advice in the good book, rules that if followed will only benefit you and your community. Honestly, eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth are for more gentle and straightforward than their predecessor Hammurabi's code. Context and placing the time and place require effort that's tough to muster up for a book most people who are Christians don't read though.

It's tough to read and look at through different lenses. One view being a collection of parables from the past, the other being objective truth based on faith. There are also many contradictions on how to conduct yourself. Such as the ten commandments, 1st one being not to have other gods, yet the religion is monotheistic, so there shouldn't be any other gods. Murder is unacceptable, but it can be acceptable, theft is unacceptable, but can be alright under the right circumstances. All sins can be forgiven as long as you can forgive, though that one eludes me.

Some people obsess over certain parts and become extremists, people get outraged and blame it on the bible, koran, torah, whatever rather than the crazies. Also looking back into our past is uncomfortable. It's an old book that spans over a long period of time. Pretty much from the start of widespread agrarian farming (the expulsion from Eden) to Christianity becoming a religion rather than a cult offshoot of Judaism (when book of revelation was added).

There are two reasons that come to mind. 1.) There are contradictions throughout
2.) The right that all humans have called free will is not practiced
Sure, free will can be practiced, but per the Bible, if you exercise your rights, you burn. You have to follow exactly, word for word, or you end up being the devil’s bitch. Doesn’t sound like a loving god would write that. So that’s probably the main reason why it comes across as offensive.

Of course, the other argument to defend the free will thing is that everyone needs discipline and the Bible teaches you how to live a life that doesn’t always conform to “the lusts of the flesh” and instead submits to an authority, humbling yourself.

In my opinion, however, this sounds too much like a government system formed by man than a god, or higher being, who, by the way, created free will. (The argument of “there has to be evil to balance out the good” is not valid at this point in the discussion). Humans use scare tactics. Look at history. It’s an evil human trait, and these human patterns are all throughout the Bible.
So I will finish with this: If a being did indeed create free will, isn’t it more powerful to have the option to choose the right decision because you know it’s good and it’s your right, revealing who you were meant to be in the process by gaining perspective and life experience?
    Or
Is it more powerful to stop yourself from being your full potential to conform to laws and rules that keep you from faults that teach you better lessons than servitude?
Also not looking for anyone to try to argue with me on this. Thanks for reading 👍🏼

The Bible judges you as you do not judge the Word of God. What you do not know about is Contract. Obey and be Blessed; Disobey and be Cursed was for His chosen people. It applies to all people.

Everyone has a monster self, seeking the same conceit as pointed out by Satan himself in the Garden: the desire to be one's own god. The truth by definition absolutism to the contrary means we are never in full control of our own minds, hearts, and destinies. We don't get to make all the rules ourselves, no matter how much we want to. We don't have total ownership of self either. Our every physical blessing is on loan, to which we're all accountable. Also, wants by themselves can never equal rights, no matter how much we wish to delude ourselves otherwise.

Nowhere does this drive men crazier, than when it confronts sexual profligates and reprobates. It rips through state propaganda they spent lifetimes crafting to excuse their perversions, and their injustices toward anyone who wouldn't celebrate said perversions. It even calls for righteous action to be taken to stop them.

This is no different than a habitual drunk driver having no love for cops, or anyone else. The perverse desire for that orivile and advantage supercedes the capacity for love.

The Bible cuts out the BS, and confronts everyone with the same message: the potential to be that monster exists in all of us, and there is only one way to not pay for it for all eternity. Not one of us can be made holy where it truly matters by any of our own scheming.

Those who are still controlled by their Old Adam, know all this, but persist in defiance out of pride. The Bible makes their guilty souls swell up like a poison ivy rash. So they feel compelled to treat it like poison ivy. Even if blue fire is their future for doing so.

I mean besides the insanity that is the old testament...

I think nearly all of the PR damage done to Christianity has come from Evangelicals and other self-proclaimed Christians who, if they actually met Jesus, would be more likely to be hammering in the nails.

The bible warns of things like a false prophet who presents themself as a devout follower but leads everyone astray. I see people attacking gays, shaming outsiders, electing people who would kick out a priest and protesters to do a photo-op with an upside-down bible, and focusing their practice primarily on eliminating that which they hate. And honestly, all I see in them is the exact false prophecy the Bible warned about.

Hence why I follow more of Christian Atheism or "Radical Christianity" (Not to be confused with extremism), and others who prioritize the actual teachings of Jesus over what they think Christianity "should look like".

"I mean besides the insanity that is the old testament..." you do know Jesus followed the old testament right? You do know that its the same God right? How strange but you did later on say you're basically an atheist so it makes sense to just pick the parts you like out of context if you don't even believe in God.

@bamesjond0069 I mean the whole point of the sacrifice was basically to wipe away the rules of the old testament. By being "sin free" he was less "following the old testament" as he was "not breaking the rules of the old testament". As I recall, he didn't stone any non-virgins. Quite the opposite, in fact.

But yeah, I'm an Atheist, so I really don't care much about the spiritual aspects.

In practice, I'd say I'm certainly much closer to what Jesus was seeking than Evangelicals. A major teaching was that it is not for us to judge others, but to leave that to a higher power. Evangelicals basically spit on this specific teaching as their founding principle.

But yeah, there are probably some questionable things about Jesus that I managed to miss growing up. But I was once told by a priest "Don't seek to be like Jesus, or Gautama Buddha, or these other religious leaders. Instead seek what he sought." So if the WBC is more of what Christianity is supposed to be, then Christianity will simply die off as the world get better than it.

Well lets talk about the gays since its a perfect example and one everyone knows about at least a little. The OT says gays are bad. Jesus comes and is most assuredly not gay or saying gays are good. He does say love your neighbor. He also said "Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword." Mathew 10:34 which is somehow glossed over. Then you have later writers such as Paul who write how gay is bad.

So after looking at all this information one must conclude that God does not endorse faggotry. He didn't in the OT and didn't in the NT. Literally nothing changed.

Not much changes from the OT to the NT.

Offensive annoyance or resentment brought about by a perceived insult to or disregard for oneself or one's standards or principles
ECCLESIASTES 7:9 “The taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones.”
Proverbs 14:17 "The one who is quick to anger acts foolishly, But the man who thinks things out is hated."
Proverbs 14:29 "The one who is slow to anger has great discernment, But the impatient one displays his foolishness."
Proverbs 29:11 "A stupid person gives vent to all his feelings, But the wise one calmly keeps them in check."
Proverbs 16:32 "The one slow to anger is better than a mighty man, And the one controlling his temper than one conquering a city."

It is offensive because it is Absolute Truth and people dislike because they will have to follow it, Absolutely. And our Hearts are deceitfully wicked, therefore, we are at odds with a Holy Creator God who Intelligently Designed man with Soul, Mind, Body and the free ability to Choose God or Choose Not God.
—And you can not choose Good, without the Creator, God calling you to Himself. We are a fallen people as the Bible points out. -I don’t like it either BUT I recognize that have capability to be both Good and Evil. Man fell of his own Choice and Doing as Bible points out and we are incapable of self-improving, self-evolving, or Enlightening into a Better State. Pride and both Atheists and Secular Humanists are highly correlated.

Because our human side does not like it's instructions/commandments but our spirit knows deep down it's correct. Even Jesus said "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak."

The thing that makes the Bible so unique - and what proves its truth - is the fact that it is both beautiful and hard to handle. Many other religions' texts tend to have a lot of wise sayings and pretty words, but the Bible has both pretty and harsh words. You can't live life and know truth without the parts that are hard to handle. The Bible is supposed to make us think. It's supposed to make us ask God to help us understand the parts, passages, etc. that are confounding, troubling, or don't make sense.

Evolution gives mankind a narrative that humans came from goo to you, via the zoo... that you are a useless and purposeless, biological and mysterious accident. The Bible's narrative is that you were created in the image of God, yet things went awry a few chapters in.

The Bible as a collection of books is a comprehensive way of weaving the symbolic and literal, historical and poetic, abstract and concrete throughout it's storytelling in a way that shows the human experience hasn't changed much, if at all, in thousands of years. It's quite astounding really.

Why are idiots offensive? Why are uneducated offensive? Why are **you** offensive?
    .
The Bible is "offensive" only to people who know little to nothing. The uneducated, the simple minded, the ignorant, the stupid. The sort that generations ago flocked to listen to the Bible because they were uneducated, simple-minded, ignorant & stupid.

There are far more offensive religious books. Read Muhammad's books. They are not even true religious books but the ramblings of a warlording tyrant that came across a fledgling culture and made it his. That is why those books exist to subvert and corrupt the actual religious teachings in the Qur'an.

Have you actually read it? Basically It's a long list of reasons to kill people for just about anything. For example in leviticus it says you'll be put to death for having a bad hair day (I shit you not, look it up). Just about all the hate and discrimination you see today has its roots in the bible.

Because people don't like hearing the truth. People don't like being told they are going to hell. Even though Jesus says that if you come to him he will change you and wash you clean of your sins... Even though Gods love and mercy.

People get angry about horrible crimes all the time. But once something is more normalized people don't care anymore

Living life as a Christian is difficult. I've been doing it for a year now. A natural response to being told your habits are evil is retaliation. "Porn is fine! You're crazy." Imagine the bible telling a gay man he is not supposed to be living the way he is? Of course that's going to offend that man.

Its simply a book of "tall tales" from long ago when people were far mor ignorant and believed in magic, witchcraft, mystical beings and gods. Its been written over and over each time being changed to suite the current agenda. Typically its fear to control you and make you obedient to the king.

The Bible is offensive to low IQ snowflakes who think that the view to which they subscribe should be the only one allowed.
That is the obnoxious totalitarianism of the left.
The Bible is a historical document that claims to be the revealed word of God.
If a snowflake is offended by God, it is self-evidently the snowflake who has the problem.

      No, I am not.
The difference between the right and the left is that we on the right do not seek to prevent others speaking and believing whatever they want to believe.
      Why?
Because we know that our positions can survive debate and scrutiny.
We are happy for the left say whatever they want, because their wakadoodle ideas are so insane and contrary to reality that they more that they speak the better that it is for us.
If someone is offended by the Bible, it shows that they know nothing about Christianity and theology in general.
What you noticed that the same leftard snowflakes do not criticise the Quran, which endorses things that to most in Western Civilisation are repugnant?
Why do they not criticise the Quran?
Because they know that somewhere there is a Muslim who will kill them if they do.
Are they afraid of Christians? Self-evidently not.

Let me see. . . a Communist talking economics, when every Marxist state has a collapsed economy; a leftard supporting a convicted paedophile in a dress reading queer stories to small children; being so ignorant of biology and observable reality that they claim that a man in a dress is a woman; being so ignorant of reality that they say that the aforementioned in a dress can menstruate and become pregnant; and so much more.
As I said, we are delighted when the loony left speaks. It shows the rest of the population how insane and dangerous they are.
We hardly have to say anything.

So you’re talking politics. Or actually, you’re stating that politics and religions/opinions/beliefs are synonymous. In other words, your beliefs can be comparable to a leftist’s religion, since, if I remember correctly, calling people names because of a differing opinion is something that is characteristic of the far left when they have no solid arguments?

I haven’t seen much substance in your arguments yet and you don’t see me calling you an ignorant snowflake. So am I making you look better or worse?

And to be clear, anyone from the left or the right are at risk of calling people names when they don’t have much knowledge on a particular subject. Popular go-to in psychology. However, your deep seated disgust for the left makes me think you’ve had an unsavory run-in with an individual from that side. Family member, most likely. So instead of solid arguments, you call them names. Makes me feel temporary relief towards the person (s) who offended you previously.
But that’s just speculation. Just like the subject of this discussion.

To those on the left, crtiticism of the Bible and religion in general is political, because Marx said that the destruction of religion was necessary for his "workers' utopia."
When someone on the left criticised the Bible, that is their real motivation.

People who don’t fully believe in the Bible don’t have to be strictly atheists either. Many people believe in a higher power but don’t necessarily prescribe to the Bible for it. It’s all about perspective. And everyone is entitled to their own.

This discussion cracks me up knowing that Kat247 isn't left wing and instead just dislikes formalised religions. Makes the whole political debate pointless.

Expand your world view a bit, because yes Marx and the left is anti-bible. But that doesn't make the bible the right answer. If you have an. enemy that points out something is wrong with something always evaluate it for yourself. They can also be right, especially if at the time they were not an enemy but just a (very wrong) free thinker.

The Bible is not offensive. Rather, it is God's word to those who would worship him. People start to take offense when they begin to realize the struggle between devotion to God and pleasing themselves. For those who worship truthfully, they consider selfish and greedy pleasures to be garbage, and put their faith in the bright future that God will soon bring about in all the earth.

Because idiots take every word of it literally, when it was intended to be a work of art. Why else would you have four different versions of the life of Jesus by four different authors, if not to illustrate that your spiritual experience is purely subjective?

I disagree with your last statement because first of all the gospels don´t differ that much in their story that one could make that statement and second of all if everything is subjective than there wasn´t a need to write it down or translate the texts in the first place. Why translate the Bible in every language if the main idea is that everything spiritual experience is purely subjective?
Yes there are some differences but they are apart from few exceptions not very substantial.

@Lionman95 Do you honestly believe that four different witnesses are going to tell the same story? No one in their right mind would believe that. John's account was deeply personal, yet not first-hand and intended to renew faith. Matthew was a first-hand experience. Luke is the only author who describes Jesus as a little boy. If the truth is black and white, why then do we have four different accounts? It's not just to make it more believable, but to provide a spiritual lesson, which is that everyone's experience of Christ is personal, in my opinion.

Yes I do, the four gospels tell the same story in four different views. John´s version is different because enters Jerusalem more often than in the other versions and his mission is longer than in the others but John nevertheless tells a version of Jesus life.
Imagine you talk with friends about a they went and you ask them seperately about how it was and they tell you multiple times exactly the same story, would that sound good to you? Like they did everything exactly the same including what they drank, when they went to restroom, what people they talked to and so on?
Because in all four gospels the main character is the same. Yes what he says and does isn´t the same everytime but it would be less plausible to me if it was.

It's a book of stories that is based on events which happen thousands of years ago which may or may not be totally true. since it's likely each time the stories were told they got slightly modified over the years. so no one currently alive likely knows what truly happened at those events in question.

It’s not offensive on face value. What’s offensive are the people who use it to try to shame and control others. Religions are mythology. If a person wants to live their own life based on that, it’s their business. When they try to influence mine, I make sure they regret it.

I would not say that the Bible is offensive. You must sit down and read it, meditate about it, and pray about it. God will let you know what is right and what is wrong. Most of us look at it as being offensive because it's not telling us that we can go out and fuck or whoring.

I think it's human nature. Man wants to believe he has total control of his destiny. If there is a God than he rules you right? I think this was a sticking point with me when I first came to the cross. I was too full of my own self importance. We think that if God exists we don't have free will. And that's totally FALSE. God doesn't want to control you. He just wants to love you because he KNOWS what you need. Even before you do.

@Subarugirl i am not arguing for the sake of winning an argument. Rather I am arguing for your sake and others.

Jesus created a new covenant vs. what was written in mosaic law. He never commanded any of those things and actually brilliantly defied those who did (Pharisees). The story of how he handled the adulterous woman was one of the best examples.

You may think you are “on to something” with your anti Christian views since that’s now considered hip and modern. But you are not on to something. This anti Christian sentiment has been around since the 1st century.

But again this isn’t about me being “holier than thou” it’s about the truth. I encourage you to open your heart and find a woman’s Bible study. At worst you will just have your pre-existing notions confirmed. However it’s possible that you might gain a new prospective on what the Bible is really about. I challenge you to gain a deeper understanding.

@globetrotter22 Jesus was the sacrificial lamb, Yahweh (aka God) is supposedly the one in control of it all. Jesus was essentially sent as a profit and a sacrifice to do the will of his father, the big boss... and it was God the father who commanded, gave them laws, and allowed those atrocities to happen if not directly instructed them... I grew up in church, read the bible , cover to cover multiple time. I am well informed on what the bible says. I refuse to worship and serve a god, a supposed omnipotent being who is jealous, wrathful, vengeful and blood thirsty.

And it's not anti Christian, All of those things are in the book.

You know I was agnostic for most of my 20s after I had a bad experience with a college ministry. It took me a long time to come back to the word. But I did. I’m far from perfect but it dawned on me a few years ago there is a higher power.

Anyway you have the free will to choose what you want. At least you have already been given the word.

But you should also be warned that “ There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death” - Proverbs 14:12.

The ideology you have embraced nowadays may seem logical but it’s seductive. Not to say I was any better just a few years ago. But deep down I knew there was a higher power.

Also people don’t follow Christianity because their perfect. No quite the opposite. They follow Christianity because they know they are not perfect.

Also if you think modern Christianity is being used to “oppress” people then you better not leave out Islam. I didn’t get started on that. But from my observations most leftists don’t have the guts to call that out. If they do it’s real brief. Christianity is just a easier target for them.

Anyway do believe most Christians go around “shoving belief systems” down peoples throats nowadays? Maybe if you pick out some isolated zealots or rural Mormon communities in Utah that might happen. But those people aren’t following the Bible anyway. Jesus did command his disciples to share but never by force.

“ And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” - Mark 6:11

He explicitly said to move on and “leave the place”’. The vast majority of Christians don’t twist people’s arms.

If you are talking about book of Joshua and Israel invading the promised land? Yes God did command the extinction of the existing civilizations there. He was punishing them for their idolatry worship (including the practice of throwing their newborns in the fire for sacrifices to pagan Gods).

I struggled with that too. But don’t assume that other cultures and religions weren’t doing the same or worse to other civilizations.

However God sent Jesus as a New Testament because the previous covenants were unsustainable (endless rules). Jesus was God in the flesh but he never commanded such atrocities.

There is weird stuff in the Bible. I do not deny that. But unless you have a holistic understanding of it you will always be led astray.

The Bible is a COLLECTION of books. It’s testimony from Jesus. It’s letters from apostle Paul. It’s about historical events in the Old Testament.

Look nothing I said above is likely going to change your mind. However the main reason I spoke up is the persecution against Christianity is a growing problem in western countries and it’s very real.

What scariest of all is I’ve notice that there is this “hip
and cool” push by ANTItheists going on that’s brainwashing young adults. Nobody is going to persecute you in a country that has freedom of religion. But if antitheists had their way they would be burning down churches, Bibles and doing all they can to eradicate Christianity.

This is not new. It happened in communist uprisings.

In the last century? Especially the last 50 years?

There are people called sociopaths who are chameleon like and will assume any identity possible to put them in a position of power.

The word of God is described as sword. It can be used and abused. Of course sociopaths throughout history have abused the zeitgeist for their own ends. These people will not only go down in history as evil but they will face an additional punishment in the afterlife. There are strict warnings about not abusing the word of God.

Why do you think Jesus got so angry at the Pharisees? Because many of them were abusing their position to burden people while under the guise of being “God’s servants.”

However we are seeing the same sociopaths abusing their power in current times to fit a popular narrative. Just ask patrisse cullors who took advantage of BLM to become wealthy and meanwhile the foundation isn’t helping other chapters. People like her would of taken on the Christian label in a different time era of it benefited her thirst for power and wealth.

Instead he just let it happen children bought and sold as sex slaves. People in positions of power within the church sexually assaulting and raping children. Death hunger suffering… he could end of that. He could have made it so it never happened but instead he decided to kill everyone but one family, start over, threaten everything to worship him of burn for eternity, and kill his own son. Sounds like a god worth serving…. No thanks

@Subarugirl “your God”. You talk to me like I am trying proselytize you. If you think that the well will always be poisoned. I am explaining my POV which is much different.

Tell has there ever been a utopia civilization on earth where none of above happened? There has and always will be evil in this world. Ever since the downfall of Adam sin has entered it. Yes Christianity has been abused (e. g. Spanish inquisition) and as I explained earlier these people were never true Christians. They were just sociopaths abusing the Bible for their own ends.

To blame Christianity for all the things you listed above is beyond ludicrous. In fact it’s Christian ideals such as compassion and forgiveness that has enabled western countries to rise to modern dominance. While we will never be perfect we do enjoy a higher standard of living and freedom than most parts of the world. You will never fully comprehend that until you do some traveling yourself. I lived among poor communities in Mexico and Thailand for months.

But anyway if you think getting rid of Christianity will magically bring a utopia than you are very mistaken. Communist directorships have resulted in millions of deaths, starvation, oppression and misery like the world has never seen. It may work on paper but that’s not how it works in real.

@globetrotter22 I think subarugirls point is that the very book which many subscribe to and believe with unwavering devotion can be used and distorted to suit whatever singular, closed minded perspective they wish. Which is contrary to Jesus teachings of love and acceptance. Some utilize this "punishment" and killing of "idol" worshippers as justification for their moral crusade. Many cultures continue idol worship, buhdists and hindus for instance; many of whom are peaceful and loving people. Yet we (and yes i consider myself christian) think its ok or acceptable to hate or, heaven forbid, kill, in the name of god, just because someone is "different"

@mobiusforniner @Subarugirl if a composer messed up a Mozart redemption who do you blame? The composer or Mozart?

Also I never said I was rock solid with Christianity for all my life. Definitely had strong doubts for a good part of my life (especially in my 20s). I could delve deeper into the cosmológical reasons for why I started believing again. I personally do not believe time is infinite.

However reading the Old Testament and then making a rash judgment without comprehending the context, history and most importantly understanding the New Testament will leave you lost. If only read the Old Testament and didn’t delve deeper in Jesus’s teachings I probably wouldn’t be a believer.

But you can not prove that God does NOT exist any more than I can prove God does exist with a few words. I also believe science is a deeper study of the fine details and intricacies of his creation.

Anyway I wish you both the best of luck. Not sure if further this debate is going to be helpful at this point.

@globetrotter22 you can’t prove your god exists any more than Odin, or Zeus, or Jupiter. I’m not saying that I don’t believe there is some higher power out there, I’m just saying that while there are some good fables in the Christian Bible… that’s all it is. A fable, a book that was twisted and used for power and wealth.

The Bible is God's inspired word and it exposes the evil nature and dark hearts of mankind and how God's judgment is upon them and people simply don't like to hear such things.
