As a new believer, I’m confused on the difference between "God and Jesus". If Jesus is the son of God, why is he sometimes referred to as God?

So God the Father (God) and God the Son (Jesus Christ) are what is called "consubstantial", meaning they are of the same substance.

The philosophical definition of substance is a being whose essence (what something is) exists in itself. So for example, I am a man. In order for me to be a man, the concept of "man" must exist. "Man" does not depend upon my existing. "Man" existed before I was born and will continue to exist after I die.

Or you can also look at the etymology of the word "substance"; "sub" means "under" and "stance" is to stand, so literally to stand under something.

So God the Father and Jesus Christ are in fact two different Divine Persons, but again are consubstantial.
